FLA: Lactarius hygrophoroides (PIC)

Hello and these were growing scattered and in small groups in the backyard underneath a Oak tree amoungst leaf litter:


Lactarius hygrophoroides. Edible.

Squirrels eat these. Ive watched a squirrel munch large specimens down to just the stem, for some reason they dont eat the stems.

Now it is my turn. Ive found and identified these mushrooms a couple years in a row and now i feel confident enough to actually try eating them. Last year i posted pictures of them and a guy from Tampa told me he tried eating them and they werent that good, but i still think it is worth a shot.

I'm going to fry them up with some eggs and will report back to you how they were.

well i took the caps (caps only) and crumbled them up into pieces into the skillet and slow cooked them in oil, then added the eggs and scrambled them.

they are definately tastey. kind of like bacon.. :thumbup:

maybe the squirrel knows not to mess with the substrate below, and doesnt want to mess up future harvests.  interesting.  The only mushrooms that grow in my yard are C. Molybdites. YAY! :frown:

well i watched the squirrel with binoculars in my backyard. it was quite comical actually.
he held the whole mushroom by the stem and just ate away at the entire cap. it was a perfect picture opportunity that i didnt take advantage of.

last summer i had a nice size outdoor cultivated patch of Psilocybe cubensis, and i watched the squirrel go to town on it! i got a perfect picture of it and posted it at mycotopia.
so squirrels are mushroom eaters.

Awesome. Can you find that pic and post it here. Thats great! well not great cause it got into your patch, but funny that it actually ate cubensis.

Yes squirrels will eat Cubensis. Ill try and find the picture for you.

Here is another collection we made yesterday of the Lactarius hygrophoroides!

And i must say these are rather delicious mushrooms.
They are all completely free of any bugs or maggots.

I would rate them as a choice edible.

We are only eating the caps tho, no stems.

And i am going on another hunt for them today, because we already ate up all the ones from yesterday, with eggs.

Yeah I love em. They grow in my back yard and I to have seen the squirels go after them. These things are good, even raw, fresh tasting. I have also made a sort of french onion soup with mushrooms out of them. I walk the oak tree covered yard for about a half hour a day and usually come away with a dozen or two.

I have several huge oak trees in my yard here in eastern NC & have seen the squirrels go to town eating those mushrooms. I have even seen them take them up in the tree & stash them. I didn't know what kind of mushroom they were until I read this thread. BTW, I also had some outdoor cultivated cubes stolen by a squirrel - I hope he tripped his nuts off!! HAHA!!!

damnit..... not too long ago i saw a whole shitload of those growing under an oak tree, but this was before i started getting into the identification of edibles(never cared about anything but psilocybes until lately) that really disapoints me that i let some tasties go. :frown:
