Unknown Lactifluus- Possible novel species. Resembles L. Hygrophoroides and L. Volemus.
    #22131502 - 08/23/15 03:55 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Unknown Lactifluus found in Rhode Island. It is most likely of the subgenus lactifluus and section Tomentosi. Could this be a new species? I have done extensive research and can't identify it.
Habitat:
In a clearing in the woods somewhat near oaks, pines, and maples. Not directly under to any trees.
Gills:
Cream. Attached and running slightly down the stem. Very widely spaced

Stem:
1/2"-2" in height. 1/2"-1" in width. Reddish-orange and mostly smooth. Often very short, especially notably so in older specimens, which would point to its staying a constant length throughout Cap Growth (after a point sometime early in development) and growing only in diameter in this period

Cap:
1.5"-4.5" across. Red-orange-Brown. Smooth to slightly velvety. Margin not curled inward when young as might be expected with a lactarius/lactifluus. Flat to somewhat umbonate when young- marging curving upwards with age.

Spore print color:
White to cream

Bruising:
None. One specimen pictured has brown on the underside of the margin. This was not found in any of the other 15 or so specimens found and was not from latex.

Other information:
Latex white and unchanging. Smells strongly of fish when old. Stipe seems too reliably short and fat to be that of either Lactifluus Hygrophoroides or Lactifluus Volemus. Gills much too distant to be L. Volemus or L. Hygrophoroides and the milk does not turn brown on contact with air (which it would should it be L. Volemus). It however reliably smells very strongly of fish which has never been reported of L. Hygrophoroides (and its lacking this  feature is actually one of the most used ways to differentiate between the the two) but is a hallmark of L. Volemus. Underside of margin of several specimens had very small and short gill-like structures that branched excessively and resembled false gills of Cantherellus Cibarius.
Not L. Austrovolemus or L. lamprocystidiatus.
The first picture resembles L. Hygrophoroides closely but they seem to slowly loose this resemblance with age.

As I reread this I realize that I didn't really get across the fact that I'm posting here in the hope of getting other opinions as to what it could be. Thank you I'd really appreciate hearing any thoughts you might have.

You would probably be a lot better off posting this on Mushroom Observer, to determine if it is a new species you would need to do microscopy. At first glace I thought it looked like a Russula but I'm probably wrong if it's discharging latex. What about Lactifluus volemus?

Thanks for the advice- I'll check there. I didn't do a great deal of looking for where to post this and this came to mind first. Also in regard to its being L. Volemus, the gills are to distant and the latex doesn't react with air to turn brown.
