Bay Area Gymnopilus species
    #5534145 - 04/19/06 04:12 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I decided to scope out some new hunting areas for next year and found a nice little place and decided to inspect what was out there. For a little bit of back ground this is in the Bay area of California On one of the bay area water ways. Here are a few habitat pics.

The far side is a nice park and all the light areas are wood ship beds. There are nice places with that lank grass to hide mushrooms during the dry periods.

This is the other side of the water way and again there is a nice trail with wood chips along the trails as well.

I came across a few patches of what I believe to be Gymnopilus.

Something smelled good so I decided to inspect.

All in all this is a place I will be visiting next year for some photo ops.

What!? Wow. do you like the smell of feet? Nono, sorry, not making fun.... just uhhh, thats a stinkhorn :-P Specifically, Clathrus ruber.

::sigh:: i wish I lived in SF. One of the best myco-hunting areas in California.

HI, Nice photos from SF. However, those may or may not be a species of Gym.

mj

Great photos.

Did you get a spore print color on those suspected gyms? They look pretty interesting.

omg, I think I've actually biked through that very same place before..That's not SF, that's like 50 miles south across the bay.

I have no idea if those are gymnopolis, but the bottom one that smells nice..hehe...That's a stinkhorn.

I found one patch in the west bay that has cyans and stinkhorns right next to each other

Certainly the right habitat with those woodchips tho for cyans...I never saw any there, but one of these days...ya never know. I'd check it once a year at least, during peak season

Hi Eris,

No spore print on the suspected Gyms. I am afraid that the kids will get into them and for the most part I just enjoy finding and photographing mushrooms. It is also a little far for me to make a return trip to grab a couple specimens for id purposes.

JD

Either way, nice pictures. They really do resemble Gyms. As far as species goes I'm not sure either. Lots of 'em are of unknown edibility. There also aren't a lot of good keys published to the public. There's a monograph. I tried ordering it a few times but every time it was out of print or stock. Same thing happened with the hygrophorus monograph i tried to order :undecided:. I really needed it because there's lots of those species in my area. Oh well.
