Once 2,750 US troops have died
    #4289199 - 06/12/05 10:06 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

The US troop body count has reached 1,700. The amount of people who died in 9/11 was a little over 2,700.

Once the US military body count in Iraq eclipses that of 9/11, do you believe public opinion will begin to shift against this war and George Bush? Do you believe that this event will put what we've done into perspective? The US military body count should reach 2,750 sometime in 2006, while Bush is still in office by the way.

Discuss.........

I don't think 2,700 U.S. military deaths will hold that much psychological impact. I do think that the number 10,000 would however. I also think that as the months (and years) go by, support for and complacency about the war will wane. The opposition to it will only get stronger (like Vietnam).

couple things:

bush's approval ratings are at an all time low
and osama said he would bleed us dry troop by troop dollar by dollar...which he is doing. we are paying like 3 billion a month to fight this needless horseshit war. republicans are stubborn dummies. whatever, it like watching a movie everyday on tv all the bombings. people controlled by religous conservatives killing people controlled by religous conservaitves...haha ohhh man, stupid religous conservatives. you know though, better to have them fighting. can you imagine if they teamed up??

I agree. Support will wane some day. However, I think it's possible that once the connection is made between our loss on 9/11 being equal then with our loss in Iraq, public opinion may begin to really shift. "Wait, we just lost another 2,700 people? What do we have to show for this?"

I also think the Iraqi citizen body count could get up to one million before people said "boo".

I guess people don't care about that too much. Let's see what conclusions they draw once the body count reaches 2,750.

Sounds fun. I'll just wait to be drafted, though. I don't feel like driving all the way to the recruitment center.

If it did have the effect you suggested I would be thoroughly sickened that the people of the US do not consider innocent Iraqi's lives as having real value. The amount of innocent Iraqi's killed by the US eclipsed 9/11 along time ago. In fact even before 9/11!

As the death toll in Iraq rises, it will reduce popular support for the war. No doubt about that.

But, since when has the ruling class of America cared about the will of the people? Oh sure, they throw 'em a bone now and again to help maintain the illusion of democracy, but if the ruling class wants to keep America imperialistic, it will. It would just have to lie some more to the people to whip up public support. "Iraq will fall into the hands of terrorists who will build nukes. Do you want the evidence of that to be a mushroom cloud in NYC?" Or whatever.

It would take massive public uprising to stop their plans. If push came to shove, we'll see what happens.

An insurgency that has killed hundreds of American troops, thousands of Iraqi civilians, and a lot of Iraqi troops and security forces is......nobody?

To some racist Americans, that is true.  But to most Americans, I really think that they want Iraq to become stable and prosperous for the average Iraqi.

Notice all of the news stories that would be on (these were a while ago) about how Iraqi people were throwing flowers at our soldiers and stuff.  It's almost as if the news media was grasping at straws to show the American public that the Iraqi's wanted us there.  Americans care about how they are perceived in the world and a lot of them are genuinely confused and hurt as to why there is so much anti-Americanism in the world.

Excessive nationalism does exist in America...but not in most Americans.

Well, nobody meaning no army. Just random people. Guerilla warfare i guess.
If a war means a combat between two armies, then you have to consider that the war in Iraq isn't one, no?

And did you know that, historically, guerilla warfare always ends up being a successful strategy?

Of course it does. It is a great strategy to attack a larger and more powerful opponent.

I really have the feeling that most Americans would nuke the whole middle east if given the chance.
