My friend is all into skating all of a sudden. He is a short Filipino dude about 35. He has always liked it but I went over to his place last night and he had like 10 boards laid out with a box of wheels and parts everywhere like he had a skate shop going. He had some lonboards too and was saying how he was going 50 down some hills. Anyways we proceeded to drink 2-24 oz Steel Reserve's each and Heineken........

hahahaha, no. The movie held a different appeal for me. The movie is based on a true story and I was 8-9 years old during the time it was based on '75-'76. My grade school friends and I use to mess around on the first skate boards doing 360 and stuff but NOTHING like what these guys do today.

I go grew up in the mid west wanting so much to be a cali surfer girl. I was an insane kid roller skating off garage roofs and making bike jumps.

In my mid 20's I moved to the Caribbean and took up windsurfing as we had more wind then waves. I'm so happy I got to know that feeling of walking on water for the time I did. I use to run a surfwear shop there to.

The movie had a lot of nostalgia for me-tube socks  I actually wore those things and remember using the fiberglass skate boards.

IT WAS NOT a "gnarly dude" type movie at all. The cinematography was sweet and its just about the first group of guys who changed the face of skating. Like, they covered how a drought in cali had people with empty pools during the same summer there were no waves and one of the guys got the idea to surf the empty pools with their skate boards.

And to see that group of guys crash the first "shmutzy competitions" with a new style was all about the spirit of pioneering.

It was cool to watch them rise to the top and get sponsors when they were all poor kids and to see where it took them later in life. The ending is actually sort of sad. All in all, worth every penny! I loved it.

Since when does someone have to be a skater to go see and enjoy a movie about it? My daughter is 8, doesn't skate and loved it.

Is that you?

The movie didn't come up to date with any parks like that nor even rail riding. The movie doesn't make it passed the 70's . In the end they tell you what became of the guys. It said one of them is now a film maker and I would assume he must've been involved with the making of this one.

The documentary was really bad ass but I think I'll wait to see this movie on cable.

Didn't Fred Durst want to direct this movie back when he had a shred of creative credibility?

Cool... Mitch Hedberg is in it... that actually makes me want to see it.

The title sounds lame the previews looked even lamer. I remember one qoute that was really corny "This is our time Bros" or something. I thought it was a movie for little kids or something. Just not my type of flick I guess. I remember one BMX flick from back along time ago that had the chick from full house in it that was Uncle Jessys wife anyone remember that one?? That one was okay too watch when I was ten years old. The Lords of Dogtown might be okay too if I was younger but these days I couldn't get my mind in the right place to go along with something like that.

I don't know what its rated. My cousins grew up around those guys, he said they're pretty much all dicks. A few of them are nice. Once they took a carburetor from some guys car, and when they saw him on the waves they said "is this yours?" and dropped it into the ocean. They were really Territorial. They'd also drop rocks onto surfers they didn't know from up above on the pier (or what was left of it) or something. I can't remember the exact stories since he told me them a few years ago.

They sound like real assholes then. That is fucked up that they made a movie glorifying them.

The movie glorified territorial surf breaks, it glorified calling police officers pigs and running from them and trespassing, and moving in on your friends girlfriend, blowing off work, wearing commercial Tee's to get laid, punching out officials who disqualify you for breaking rules and so much more.

I never said it was a movie about choir boys. It's a movie based on real life and they are portrayed to have some "issues".

There is a lot of depth worked into the dynamics of the intepersonal relationships related to life, friends and loyalties.

Then ending ties it up well.

I definetly had a different impression of what it was going to be about just from the previews. The kid in the previews who makes the comment about life becoming one long summer break fucks it all up for himself.

If I had to compare it to a movie , to me, it would be a mellow version of BLOW.

Yeah, I'm actually hearing some suprisingly good things about that movie. It makes me want to fully skate again... when you roll with the right crew, there's just as esoteric atmosphere that hits you when you're all together.

I think I just may get off my ass and catch this flick... I never go see any movies. I hope it's worth the $500 million they charge at the theatres nowadays!
