Cow poo
    #4239759 - 05/31/05 01:41 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

No horse poo available at the garden center, got some nice cow poo however. They also had straight millet for $2.95 per 5 lbs., woo!!

Anyways, what is the ratio of verm I need to mix with the cow poo? I don't have any straw. Also, has anybody ever tried mixing coir with cow poo for the same effect as mixing verm ?

I never go with more than 50% poo, especially with cow poo, which is very fine. It needs a lot of roughage to bulk it up and give it an airy texture more conducive to fast mycelium growth.

Yes, coir has been used, but I have no links. In the cultivation archive, in the Substrates folder, I think, Anno had an experiment with coir in the substrate, PF Tek style, and he said STERILIZE well as coir is prone to contam.

no.
it won't perform on any level like the H will.

H is contaminant resistant,
quick colonizer,
no additives needed (straw is a risk for contam's)
and produces more potent mushrooms than any other substrate i've heard of (with the exception of supplementations)

if you can't find the H, try one of our sponsors

4 cups cow manure
1 cup verm
1 cup rye grass seed

this mix must be sterile, so inoculate in a glove box.
or, PC in pint jars and inoculate pf style.

cow manure and straw works just as well as hp, when properly pasteurized.

Ok we are not talkin about poo for jar substrate, I will be spawning a colonized quart of WBS to it.

I cannot find Anno's thread in the archive.

Coir does not need to be sterilized, it is a nice non-nutritious material that only contams after myc waste gets to it.

I'm just thinking 50% cow poo and 50% coir would make a nice mixture a lot like horse poo. Pasteurized in the oven for an hour or so. Thoughts?

In this post/thread:

P. cubensis "Burma" on coco coir/brf cake

Anno said this:

Quote:

Be forewarned: if you don?t have a proper pressure cooker, don?t even think about it.
Around half of the jars succumbed to bacterial contamination. It seems that coco coir has a very high load of bacteria and it is notoriously hard to completely sterilize.

The few occasions I have used coir in my STERILIZED substrates, I have had no problems that weren't introduced from other sources (sadly, a contaminated syringe).

My one attempt to use it in a bulk PASTEURIZED substrate resulted in a seriously nasty bacterial contamination, but I was using coir chunks (about 1/4 inch in size) and I think these insulated their interiors from the pasteurization temperatures.

I have not yet tried to pasteurize the ground coir, like that which is used in casings, as part of a bulk substrate. I might have better luck.
