My Dog is sick....
    #4229779 - 05/28/05 01:36 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

For the last two days my dog has had diahrea, with blood in her poop.  We called the vet and she said that "it's just a flu, give her an adult dose of pepto, and don't let her drink water"  It was not an easy task, but she got it down.  And I really don't think we should take her water away, I think the runs would make her dehydrated.  So we're just watching her close and feeding her brown rice.

I was wondering if maybe she has Irritable Bowl Syndrome, hemmroids or something?  Possibly she swallowed a sharp object.  Maybe she needs an X-ray?  Her attitude and personality have not changed, she's still drinking water and very, very active.

Has anyone had this problem with their dog?

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks :frown:

I really dont know. I would take a sample into your vet and have them analyze the situation...

If the pups energy is good. You can just monitor the situation. I agree she needs water. Sometimes a change in food can cause the runs. Keep an eye on her energy. Rice or oatmeal are good choices.

There is a great book for dog care. Natural health care for dogs and cats, by Pitcarin. Most animal problems can be cured at home. In fact your vet can make things worse sometimes. Good luck from one dog lover to another.

Get a second opinion from a different vet.. I used to have a black lab, that this happened to twice.. Once from eating a pheasant head, we had to just wait for him to pass it, the other time it was some kinda parasite, and we got him medication. Plus you'll feel better about the vets advice, if a second one says the same thing..

Thank you all so much for the advice. I think the bleeding has stopped, but I'll post back when she's all better.

Do you give her bones to eat?

I know this person who unnecessarily lost a dog to that. He started looking ill and pooping pink. The person took him to the vet who told it was nothing serious.

A week later the dog died - a bone piece had made a cut in the intestin.

I'm not saying this to preoccupy you. It is most likely (and hopefully) nothing serious. But i would definitely make sure the vet considered this possibility.

I have fed my dogs raw diets consisting of bones and all, chicken and beef. Wild canines eat raw bones all the time.

It is not good to feed dogs cooked bones because cooking makes them brittle in a way that can cause them to have long splinters that are dangerous to dogs.

Bones are good for dogs but I would wait until they are at least 6 months old to play it safe.

Glad to hear the pup is doing better.

PM me if she gets worse. I have some alternative solutions that may help although I'm by no means an expert. But I agree with what you said about being dubious about removing her water. Consider finding another vet for a second opinion. How old is she?

Check her entire body for lumps if you havent' already.

Thanks to everyone again, I pm'd grizz.

I don't give her any bones.

I talked to Kalix and he said that maybe the vet didn't want her to have water, so that her digestive juices could break down whatever may be stuck.

She's three, and I will check her for lumps.

Don't take her water away. If she has the runs then she is already going to be dehydrated and removing her water will only speed that up and make her sicker.

Blood in stools can be lots of things from minor to fatal. I wouldn't mess around with it and I would have her straight down the vet.

The main causes of blood in stools is viral (shouldnt be a worry if she is fully vaccinated), parasites (again, if she's wormed etc. shouldn't be a problem), disease (kidney, liver etc) or blockage or perforation. The last couple are most obviously the worst.

Take her to a different vet. If it is a blockage or a perforation then it is not something to be messed around with. If she is not vomiting then I doubt it's a blockage - but again - don't rule it out. It's possible she's eaten something sharp (stick, rock etc) and this may have scratched her up a bit inside.

However as I said - it's not something to mess around with and I'd be taking her to the vet as soon as you can.

Good luck and keep me updated.

Thank you grizz.

I really think she's improving, there has been no blood for the last two-three days, and her turds are getting more solid.
