Will this heater work?
    #4225697 - 05/27/05 07:59 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

This heater for aquariums is running at max (82 deg. F) and is sitting in that glass jar which is just about full of water and sits in the cardboard box that is closed most of the day.

About 10% of the heater is above water, does that matter?

The daily temp ranges from 78-80. This method is just to raise it a couple of degrees, and keep some moisture in the air in the box as the air here is rather arid and my friend worries about the jars stalling from dryness.

If it keeps the temp in the box above 75f your good to go

So it's probably not a fire hazard?

As long as that heater stays in water to the fill level. Your ok.

And spores will germinate/myc grow at 70 deg, 75-80 = good parimeters

Oh and your friend worrying bout the jars. My first grow i had 3 qt jars wrapped in a towel and neglected them in my closet for 2 weeks, checked em and they were 80% colonized, didnt even have 2 shake em   course thats why it took 2 weeks

Remember its takes 5-7 days for spores to germinate, and a week + for it to fully colonize

It should specify unless its a submergable. Keep the heater its self under water and it wont over heat. Thus no fire hazard

Yeah, they couldn't get the whole thing submerged. The temps in there are 78-80 anyways, so I'm sure it's fine. I just took the thing out. How can one ensure the jars don't dry out though?

yea the arrow/line on the heater that says MINIMUM WATER LEVEL

im thinking 10% exposed is a little too much.

edit: i am guessing its right under the plastic of the top. is it fully submersible? if so just get a bigger jar and drop it completely in there.

don't worry- you don't need any humidity in your incubator.
the jars, themselves will retain the moisture.
you need to completely submerge your submersible heater.
if you don't, it will surely crack, and/or overheat.

frankly, those glass ones suck. (visitherm particularly)
and the warranty on them is useless (valid only if the manufacturer is somehow at fault for the malfunction.)
i've had three of them.
then i got the guardian .
pretty sure it will outlive me.

i'd reccomend a sterilite tub in tub setup for your incubator.

That incubator is only a cardboard box lol...

the jars have the lids on with a couple small holes in them and a tyvek filter on top

moisture won't escape the jars? the grower is in Arizona, a pretty dry area.
