My cat keeps shaking his head like crazy
    #4215091 - 05/24/05 04:36 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I wake up this morning and there is my cat just shaking his head as though something is irritating inside his ears.

He appears to be perfectly healthy otherwise, and this just started up today.

If it doesn't stop by tomorrow I'll call the vet.

Any idea what could be causing his head-shaking?

Could be ear mites. I know dogs can get them, but I'm not sure about cats.

cats get mites. try to clean out his ears with a q-tip. be careful not to dig in too far. btw, cats do NOT like to have their ears cleaned, so you most likely will have a struggle- good luck!

That's what I thought too...ear mites...

I have drops for that.

But could he just wake up with them one day? He wasn't head-shaking yesterday. I mean, is infestation really that fast?

Is it like a deliberate shaking? or involuntary? is the cat constantly shaking? or does it come and go? When I was a kid, a friend of mine had a cat who got into some farm chemicals and it ended up with damage to its nervous system, causing it to shake its head around involuntarily. Let's hope its nothing that serious. :/

Yeah it sounds like ear mites. And it can get infested quickly.

take some gauze and some of your ear might solution and drip about 10 drops of it into your cats ear. Grab the ear by the bottom and squish it around until it makes a very gross noise. Keep doing this for about 45 seconds. Use the gauze to wipe the inside of the ear out as best as possible.

If problem persists, take to your vet

Yes, it is deliberate shaking.

I'll try the drops I have for ear mites and see if that helps.

Thanks guys.  I love my kitty.

Is it anything like this:

Metal cat ?

If so, I'd definately say either mites or ear infection. If you look in the cat's ears with a light and can't see little black specks, it isn't mites.

My cat?

The one in the movie is from Ebaumsworld, probably from somewhere else before there.

I'd take the cat in now - not tomorrow. your cat is obviously in discomfort.

He had the black specks too.  I gave him some drops...he got all mad and ran away underneath the futon but he isn't shaking his head so much.  Now I have to do the other cats.

If the drops don't work then I'll take him into emergency care, but I hate doing that because it's a $75 after-hours fee simply to have them take a look.

Ah, the joy of pets!

Well the specks mean mites, so you're going to have to treat every cat in your house. It's not life-threatening, just annoying for them, although depending on the severity they can scratch hard enough to tear their ears.

No scratching yet...just some head shaking.

It seems to have died down after I gave the drops. Looks like they gave him some relief.

Maybe your cat knows what you did the other day, and thats how it's communicating it's feelings towards it.

I think cats know more than we think they do.
