Oyster Mushroom Substrates???
    #419908 - 10/09/01 05:27 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

I have been attempting to search but all of my attempts have come up with 'no matches'. I'm sure I am not using the right type of words in my search.

I am aware that oyster mushrooms will grow on straw. Can I also assume that they will grow on dung based composts? Can anyone lead me to a site that will have some cultivation information for oysters....In particular substrates and Teks

Thanks!
Rhino

I don't recommend growing them on dung. In the wild, they grow on dead logs. Pleurotus ostreatus in California grows mainly on live oak. You can grow them on straw based substrates, but your yield will be low if you don't supplement it with bran.
You can grow pf style cakes, crumble and mix the into pasteurized straw/bran, put the mixture in a bag and allow to fully colonize. Once colonized, punch holes and you'll get some fruit.

Thanks Azure!
I have access to live oaks where I live. I can make chipped live oak and/or sawdust from dry logs. Would a pastuerized mixure of this work or does the wood need to be decomposed? When you refer to bran are you talking about wheat bran and the like?

I assume it is possible to clone these babies from fresh supermarket ones?

That cat litter paper pellet stuff looks good for them. If it holds together as a pellet when wet it might make good spawn too.

The ones in the UK are called Bio Catolet. I've not tried them yet.
