Science Fiction Fantasy books

Shroomism inspired this post by bringing up the Wheel of time series by Robert Jordan. I'm a big fan of Fantasy ever since reading The Lord of the Rings series and subsequently everything that Tolkien ever wrote over 30 years ago.

Just a few of my favorites!

A must read is a series written by Roger Zelazny called "The Chronicles of Amber". The first five books are among the best reading I've ever enjoyed. The next five are worth the read as well. This guy Tripped for sure!

The books are too short for my liking but pick up the first book "Nine princes in Amber" and you will be locked in for the ride!

Next on my list comes a series by David Eddings called "The Belgariad"!

A must read!

Has anyone read these works?

I have a few more suggestions to come if anyone is interested.

Can't say I've read any of those.. other than Wheel of Time.
I used to be a big fan of Robert Jordan's writings.. back when he wrote Conan books.

Now I've created a monster.. 5 book threads. And now I have like 30 new books to read.

If you read anything choose Roger Zelazny's Nine Princes in Amber!

Tad Williams stuff is great try the Otherland series the first book is a little tuff to get through but the next 4 our a trip

I haven't read anything from the Chronicles of Amber but I know I've read something of Zelazny's....I took a Science Fiction course three semesters ago that was way awesome.

This is a bit outside the fantasy genre, but if you're looking for solid Sci-Fi check out The Stars My Destination.

Have you read Hambley's (sp) "Time of the Dark" series?

Rare to find someone who has read Eddings and Amber stuff :wink: :thumbup:

C.S. Friedman: "When True Night Falls", "Black Sun Rising", and "Crown of Shadows" are an EXCELLENT mix of sci-fi and fantasy. Not too much, not too little, yet strikingly real. Awesome trilogy. Unfortunately IMO all her other books suck.

The Amber Spyglass Series cant remember the author but its a classic brought a tear to my jaded eyes when i read it

I find that to be the case with a lot of authors, you read a series of five or so books and assume that because you liked it you would like his or her other works. More often than not I'm disappointed. It's like a one hit wonder.

It's a sad thing though because its a bad reflection on the author. More often than not its the publisher making them pump out trash because of a book deal. You can't force a good author to write well at EVERY given point, especially with a steel cage around them.

Awww hell yeah! I LOVE those books... One of the most unique ideas in fantasy in a very long time. Great politics, treachery, and intrigue in these books... it's great that you're just as deceived as the main character all the time and you slowly unravel the webs of lies.

More recommendations!

Piers' Anthony's Tarot books are a good sci-fi trilogy... they are about a monk investigating dangerous areas on a newly colonized planet in which one's imagination becomes reality... he journeys through manifestations of his own psychological and religious issues, searching for some proof of God. Very trippy... lots of Tarot imagery and themes...

That's what makes the books so great, politics, treachery, and intrigue within an excellent SFF series conceived on such a great premise!

I'm trying to think of a book Adamist was telling me about last week..

I think it's called Rift.. or something like that.. about this land where these certain feathers have mind-altering properties.. the legal ones make you dumb and slow.. and the illegal ones are like psychadelics.. and this guy is a dealer of these illegal feathers that take you into other dimensions. Damn what's it called.. anyone know what I'm talking about?
