Is hardware worth it to make electronic genre'd music?
    #4184336 - 05/16/05 11:33 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Ok I was wrong. The EMX-1 is not what I'm looking for and I can already tell I'm not going to use it. I gave it too much credit where credit wasn't due. It's majority a sequencer, and a bad one at that. Pretty useful samples and such, but it's not what I'm looking for.

And I was perusing around and first thought

Ok, how about a microKORG ? And then I read about it and it sounds like it's 100% worthless. Non-velocity sensitive MINI keys? No thanks already.

And I saw the Alesis Micron but that still doesn't seem all too hot. Is my best option honestly to just get ANY sort of velocity sensitive keyboard and just use all software? I have Reason 3.0 but I've never really gotten much use out of it. Should I just buy an Oxygen-8 and work Reason with that?

I'm currently under the impression that Reason 3.0 has a whole lot of sounds and that it's an incredibly useful tool. Is it worth getting a hardware synth? Are there any hardware synths that can make sounds that Reason can't?

=/ Wish I knew what to do here.

Man, who cares about getting the best sounds on the planet. YOu're a beginner with a vague idea of where you even want to take this. Just download fruity loops and start messing around with step sequencing beats and piano rolling melodies. You can adjust velocity for each note in the piano roll. It seems tedious at first but the more you use it, the more your pallete opens up. We tried to warn you about that piece of hardware but i guess you got impulsive. So once you get the hang of some free software, then you can get a better idea of where you want to drop your money. And have fun man. Once you start fretting about it, walk away and do something else. Can't force inspiration.

Ha, you got me pegged. Sometimes I find something that I'm like

"Wow"

and it's impossible to talk me out of it. But one day I'll learn and take advice into account. Time for a MIDI controller and Reason 3.0. Gotta take it into my own hands.

Well I got me a 100 dollar M-Audio Keystation 49e.

PERFECT controller. Heavy (ish) keys, velocity-sensitive, pitch and mod wheels, and volume control slider

100 bucks and you can go NUTS with any hardware you want.

Sweet.
