Self Healing Patch for a Spore Print
    #4182265 - 05/16/05 03:01 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

If you use a vendor print who uses a plastic baggie you could put a blob of silicon on the package and use it as a self healing injection port for loading your syringes.

Suck up a syringe full of water and squirt out half of it. Sterilize.

Now stick the needle through the patch and squirt out a few drops of water.

Now scrape some spores into the water by swirling around the needle.

Now suck up the water. Since the syringe is only half full you have a lot more "suck" available and should be able to get almost all the water back into the syringe.

Maybe vendors could put the blob of silicon on the prints themselves if requested, costs next to nothing for the silicon but saves people having to pay for a whole tube when all they want is a pea sized blob.

by the use of silicone, i imagine you are implying that you would use this more than once.
seems like a pretty good idea,
but what will you do between syringes with the moisture in your bag?
i'd be concerned that the spores would germinate and colonize a print taken on paper.

Should have no nutrients, unless it is a woodlover! You could stick in a jar with some desiccant if you are that worried, plastic bags are porous. I usually open my bag a tiny bit and do the same procedure and have never had any germination that I could see. I don't know if any vendors use glass plates or aluminium foil but they would work well.

A petri dish would really need the hole cut and siliconed prior to printing by the vendor.

Great link!. I thought somebody must have done it before. I registered in 2000 but have been away and am only catching up on the latest methods.

I'm surprised no vendors are selling them. The silicon would do away with the need for a sealer, though the tape is easy and could be layered on top of itself each time. I think the semi-evacuated syringe is more imporant for people planning on keeping a print for many years as it will leave the spores pretty dry.
