not sure what would be the "ideal" height. i always went with what was convenient with my setup (indoors). if outside i just do it around 8-12" or so. then let them get huge. unfortunatly mine all died from a freeze
i never had a problem with standing water and cuttings. i change it every now and then.

There is really not that much to it. I change the water about once a day, and the locations well suited for growing a salvia plant (indirect sun light etc) are also well suited for the cutting. I like to put in a terrarium with some wet perlite just like you would with pf cakes to prevent any wilting, but it is not necessary. I've never counted the days but I'll guess it's like 5 days to a week until you notice the roots.

I say any age that your plant can handle the stress of losing foliage. I usually grow a large Salvia plant, then harvest a few cuttings from it and pick of and dry the rest of the leaves for later use. Also I love to root mine in plain tap water in an old jelly jar, takes maybe 5-9 days.

I make cutttings every time it gets to big. Then from every place i cut just above the node two more branches pop out, then when those get to about six inches a make more cuttings. I pick of a leaf or two every few days just to give the smaller branches more light.
On the average i spend an hour each day with my garden. Happy plants = happy shiek

The thicker the stem th ebetter the cutting, and my cuttings are mostly takin so they are about 4 inches long. Cuttings of the tips at about 2 inches dont do so well, they are skinny and weak.

i like pinching the whole plant back and keeping it compact. It regrows twice as lush. I could easily have 40 well rooted plants by the end of this summer it seams.

Sure, i would pinch all the leaves of any ways. Leaving just the small finger nail sized leaves on the stem.

i did that once. What i do now is just place a couple inhes of water in the cop and drop a cuople cuttings in. Then as soon as i see root nodes forming i plant them.

I have a salvia plant. I repotted it into a large pot not too long ago, hoping that the extra room for the roots would encourage amazing growth. I didn't realize that there was no drainage and the soil started floating after a couple of big soaks.
The plant went limp. I burned a hole in the bottom of the plastic pot and let the water drain out. Then I propped the plant against a jar and prayed. It took a few days, but it recovered very nicely.
I took a few leaves off the bottom, too. I chose the driest ones and the plant immediatly firmed up and became very healthy looking again. After waiting for the soil to dry out sufficiently, I gave it a good watering with some miracle grow. Now there are new leaves budding out of almost all the nodes. It's looking pretty good.
The plant is only about a foot and a half tall, so I won't be taking any cuttings for a while. Also, the only light it gets is from a window, so the leaves have completely abandoned one whole side in favour of the lightened side. Will this lighting condition be acceptable when the plant gets to be four feet tall or more?
I am also a little concerned about the miracle grow. Thoughts on nutrients for her?
