Bruising or Contamination?
    #4134028 -

Ok, everyone, I finally borred my friends digital camera so I could post photos of this.

I have two Treasure Coast PF cakes that have some blue coloration on them. This normally would not concern me, as I know that cakes can bruise. But this blue color is on fluffy mycelium (or what I thought was mycellium).

So, I am not sure what to think. I have photos, which I am posting. This is the first flush for these cakes, they have taken FOREVER and were dunked immediately after birth.

I would hate to have to throw them away, because they have a trillion little mushies on them.

The blue color appears to be the same color as mushroom bruising.

Both Cakes:

It's bruising, not mold. Most likely it was caused from drying out during the time from your dunk until now. The only blue mold I know of is penicillium, and it's usually a perfectly round circle, and much darker.

Just to repeat here for all to see, there is no need to throw away mushrooms from a mold contaminated cake. Green and Blue/green molds are not pathogenic to humans, although you don't want to leave a contaminated cake in your grow area because it will puke spores all over everywhere, ruining your future projects. Also, never sniff mold spores. Don't eat a mushroom that is rotten or otherwise contaminated with bacteria, as that will give you food poisoning unless you boil it first.

Thank you very much for the quick response! I would have hated to throw these cakes away, they are FULL of shroom. So many, they are even growing off the leca rocks below the cakes in the grow chamber!

I couldn't help but nominate that third pic for the May PotM. Great pics! I love the mycelium in the third one.

I have the same problem but it seems to be covering the entire cake! I tried swapping it with a q-tip and nothing was brushed on the q-tip. I didn't notice it till today and it has seemed to grow fast. I'll try to get a pic up and search more posts about this kinda problem.
