Goddammit, my grow chamber is full of them. At first I thought I was keeping their population in check by killing a dozen or so every time I opened my grow chamber for fanning/misting, but now they're completely beyond control; the one casing in my grow chamber is absolutely covered with them. On the up side, I've found some amusement in weighing my casing every day with my new scale and predicting what I refer to as its fruit fly half-life: that point at which 50% of the organic material in the casing has been converted to flies. Seriously, it's a sterility problem if nothing else -- has this ever happened to any of you? I'm thinking maybe my humidity level is too low, although the whole bottom of my grow box is covered with damp Perlite beneath a wire mesh and the box itself is well sealed. Please help.

All it takes is 1 fly man. Once when I was checking a jar, 1 little fruit fly buzzed past and just landed on the jar lid. A few days later a couple of the jars had friendly little maggots smiling at me through the glass and a few fruit flies flew out of the box.

Flies suck (no offense :)
So is there any way of getting rid of them, from a casing, other than throwing the casing out? I wonder if hydrogen peroxide would kill them, while not harming my mycelium?

all mushroom fly pests are phototropic. ie, they will fly into a bug zapper. trick is, you need a bug zapper that will get the little ones! this way you will not need to employ poisons.
some can be gotten by lady bugs or praying manti.
Stamets reccomended using a sticky strip next to a light and perhaps even adding a fan to suck them in.

Yah but if they eggs are lain in your casing, then you have maggots in there and there is no hope of getting rid of bunches of those fuckers.

I have sprayed the inside of my terrarium lid lightly with Raid. No more flies.

Diatomacous earth might by worth a try. I used them on my plants and it worked great. It works by slicing the larva in pieces. Diatomacous earth is composed of crushed seashells. So you probably could add it when you make your cake substrate. For your casings you could just sprinkle it on top. Those little flies probably arent fruit flies but fungus knats, cause they love to eat the fungus that is in a plants soil from organic nutrient.

Hmm... I think they've already killed my mycelium actually (yes, there are that many of them), so I'll probably just throw it out now and clean out my grow chamber. But maybe I'll try some seashells next time -- flies just love that cow shit

I have had great success killing everything from flies, maggots and green mold. With out killing spores and mycelium grows back rapidly.
About 1/8 cap of pyrex bleach mixed in about a cup of water.
I don't leave in the mix longer than a couple hours.
Then a quick rinse of water soak.
Occasionally it takes a couple different times but always works for killing everything else leaving the original spores and some mycelium fully alive.
Hydrogen peroxide soak also helpful combination.
30 jars and 5 bags of rye berry grain.
All full recovery and fast. 5 or more flushes.
G T & B plus. Cambodia and others.

DE is great. Just be careful. Don't breath it(duh). But seriously it'll fuck you up. Wear at least a dust mask when you are mixing it.

consensus = not worth it.
