Out Door Patch has Fruit Flies!!
    #1802534 - 08/11/03 06:36 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Ok heres the deal, my hippie friend used one BRF cake spawend it to corncobb then spawend it to straw in dish tubs. When the mycelium was 100% he dugg a hole in the ground barried the straw and covered with peatmoss. Mushrooms are popping up, but there tons of fruit flies chillin on the peatmoss. What should he do?

corn cobb

straw

shroom with flies on it

little fuckers......

Whew, that's a tough one.  I can only think of mediocre ways to combat that in an indoor environment.  Outdoor, I think you're pretty much going to have to live with them.  There are strong pesticides available, but the effect on you, the mushrooms, and the environment are questionable.  Even something like frogs or preying mantises only hit the buggers above the surface.  Maybe some Frontline or Advantage rubbed on the mush?  j/k

Nice looking fruit, though

The only thing I can think of is mayby some dilute h202 solution would kill the fuckers... but I have no idea if it will.

I agree with AFungitobewith. As far as I know, the fruitflies won't hurt your shrooms, and there's no real good way to rid your patch of them, as you're growing outdoors, so try and live with them.

Maybe it will deter them to another sappy rotting spot

Which gives me an idea...: you could try putting some (rotting) fruit somewhere else in your garden, as a decoy for the fruit flies. A major drawback is that this rotting-fruit-patch will attract more fruit flies than you had in the first place...

were were all you shroomies yesterday?  My hippie friend worried all day.  Well if you guys don't think the little fuckers wont hurt the shrooms.  Who cares right?  He'll just have to move the patch next time.  I noticed the shrooms grew alot overnight,  didn't look like the fruit flies harmed the shrooms...

Thanks for the info

hey as long as the fruits are picked quikly then you shouldnt have to worrie about to much gnat larvae damage. You will still probably have a few in there but not to worrie. You should dry them out quickly so that the larvae dont consume to much of the mushroom material.
