Hardcore Zen: Punk Rock, Monster Movies and the Truth About Reality
    #4128328 - 05/03/05 05:29 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Has anyone else read this? I am not sure if this belongs here or in the Spirituality forum but it is a book.

So ya - if anyone has read it and is familiar with it, let me know. I'd love to have a conversation about it.

I've seen it in the bookstore many a time, but have always been kinda wary. Worth reading?

absolutely!!!!! it's amazing really. Brad Warner has such a great way of writing and helping you understand buddhism.

the title might seem a little silly and trying to be cool but once u read it - you'll realize it's NOT a mockery of Zen Buddhism, it's great. the guy also has a website:

I am reading it right now. The author, Brad Warner, explains aspects of zen in a simple and modern vernacular, and I recommend the book to anyone interested in Zen.

"As with many self-destructive kids, Noah Levine's search for meaning led him first to punk rock, drugs, drinking, and dissatisfaction. But the search didn't end there. Having clearly seen the uselessness of drugs and violence, Noah looked for positive ways to channel his rebellion against what he saw as the lies of society.

Fueled by his anger and so much injustice and suffering, Levine now uses that energy and the practice of Buddhism to awaken his natural wisdom and compassion

Noah is now a Buddhist teacher in training with Jack Kornfield and the teaching collective at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA. He teaches meditation retreats nationally as well as leading groups in juvenile halls and prisons around the San Francisco Bay Area."
