The music is good, but I don't know much about it. Also, what's with the mohawks and leather jackets and pins, and the pant's with all the leather sewn into this big patchy mess and etc.

started ~ 1976 in three places at once. they all influenced each other, although they all claim to be the original. NYC, England, LA.
NYC = ramones, television, patti smith @ CBGBs + LA = germs, weirdos, X, black randy, screamers @ the masque + England = sex pistols, siouxsie sioux, clash
punk was a rebellion against hippie culture gone stale in the boring 70s. short, loud, fast, unpretentious, mean, sarcastic. "I hate pink floyd" tshirt of j. rotten.
fashion = influenced by the glam scene earlier in the decade (ny dolls, bowie, etc.) the point was to be ugly & shocking.
punk = DIY (do it yourself). independent labels, self-promotion. playing music not for money but for the love & fun. "get in the van motherfucker."
70s punk gave way to 80s hardcore.
poppunk = late 80s, early 90s backlash against hardcore. poppunk goes mainstream and is absorbed the commodity culture of the spectacle. flash forward to today & you have ashlee simpson & TRL & Blink182 & Good Charalote, etc. etc.

Stupid people got together and decided they didn't understand prog rock since they were so stupid and they wanted to make music they could understand.
(note: there are some ok stuff in the genre, namely that done by the guys who used lots of LSD, but that is the general pattern in music. Some stuff by joe strummer is decent, and his later work with the mescaleros has some good stuff.)
Also note that the 'I don't need no drugs' straight edge asshole crowd started with punk.

Don't forget about The Buzzcocks in the UK
Also, the Misfits were around in NYC in the late 70's @ CBGB's...they seemed to have a scarier crowd

see, the kids who got into punkrock who so bored by the pretentious attitudes of "progressive rock" and the rockstar culture of the 1970s that they wanted something rebellious and sexy and youthful and egalitarian again - it was a throwback to early rocknroll and the height of the 1960s.

...yes, as a reaction to the rampant and deadly herion and alcohol addictions that had plagued not only punk rock, but also the height of other youth movements. They wanted to progress and avoid these pitfalls. They wanted clear thought. Sure, there were some who sxe too far, but those in the vein of ian mackaye should be recognized for their integrity.

Notice the person who defends punk rock has a swastika in their avatar.
Ian Mackaye needs to have a joint and a handful of mushrooms and listen to some king crimson or some tool is what I think.

Hey now, let's be friends. Let's just agree that punk is dead and most artists who are straight edge suck. I don't know who Ian Mackaye is so I can't give my personal opinion.

yes, punk is dead.
some sxe sucks, some doesnt.
ian mackaye = minor threat, fugazi, dischord records
fugazi is one of the more brilliant bands around and has been for quite awhile now. they are 100% integrity and non-corporate and counter-culture.

Ian was the lead singer for a band called Minor threat. he was suppposedly the intiator of the "straight-edge", now you have some angry high pitched punks these days called Anti-Flag, bitchin about politics and punk fashion, and not letting people smoke cigarettes at their shows, etc.
-------------------- A plethora of music aspirations control my temptations of future revelations beyond "now". The percussion, and the heart beat of my love and devotion. The rhythm goes beyond, prying into the third eye, releasing the creativity held so far inside. The melodicies, through the out of tune pianos and broken classical guitars...there lies a beauty. A beauty as prevelent as the fire inside. To release these energies is pure ecstacy, to deveop these gifts is sacred. The vocality, so pure as can be, shying away from herself, lies within me. For the underlying serenitity, this is what I live for. I plea for harmony, and nothing more. Music equals love. Creation of love leads to the procreativity of the World, and it's spirals and puddles prevailing.

Actually.. Isn't Ian from the DC punk band, Fugazi? He's just someone that's high and mighty about being straight edge.
Punk is still alive and well.

yeah Fugazi are the shit! Straight Edge shmucks piss me off though. I respect Ian and bands like Propagandhi but i hate these Good Charlotte fans that are supposedly straight edge and vegans and eat meat pies but cry when someone gives them meat at a school retreat thing and are born again christians that claim their new found faith has given back them their virginity, god just sewed that hymen right back up again... hmm maybe it's just this one chick that shits me. A real attention seeker she is.

Or El Duderino, if, you know, you're not into the whole brevity thing.
