Hey guys I went hunting for the first time today and found these in a creek growing on woodchips in victoria (eastern suburbs) and they were in several groups of about 15-40. From what i've read they look similar to Psilocybe cyanescens but I am a total newbie so really have no clue. The stem is hollow and the pic of the spore print isnt very clear but its kind of dark brownish - black. Any ideas?

Australia. There were other ones there which were totally similar in every way except the caps were wavy, would they be different type or same species but just more mature?

Probably same species. You'll be looking for P. subaeruginosa. It's in the cyanescen complex. I've never picked them, not being from there, but they are very similar to cyanescens. You'll be looking for something with more of white stems, not that orange, yellow color you have, and VERY obvious bluing when you handle them. Check the sticky thread at the top for the mushrooms you should be looking for. Peace

Your shrooms are unmistakeably Stropharia aurantiaca, a common species on woodchip beds (although rare in natural settings) often co-occuring with Psilocybe cyanescens.
Inactive, possibly slightly poisonous.
I posted about this species and its association with Psilocybe cyanescens last year.. can't be bothered to dig up the post but it's there if you want to search for more info.

No dice. I have found some of the very same thing and at first sight they can be reeeeaaaalllllll tricksters however upon closer observation it becomes quite evident that they are not what is desired. damn.
