I have a couple of nearly colonized PF 1/2 pint jars with green mold only on the vermiculite barrier. Are they safe to use in a casing?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

All that would result is transfering the mean GREEN along with the cakes.

I thought that once the cake is colonized, it won't contaminate. I already cut of the green. All that's left it pure white. Okay? Or not?

...The way I see it is that if the trich hasn't taken over the colonized part of the jar, and if I fully remove it, it will not take over the casing.

just because all you see is white hardly means it isnt there. You could give it a shot but the odds are you will just get a big green casing

**I have edited this comment until i can verify my claim the green mold mycelium is not green, anyone?**

The mean green is  white. Its turns green when it is ready to release spores. It does not look like myc.

Key word here is nearly.

The green will probably consume the cake before its fully colonized.

If the contam doesn't...pull the cakes out after they are fully colonized...scrape the verm barrier off...and any sign of the mean grean.
Then dunk the cakes in a bleachy water bath.
They might make it...they might not.

Your taking your chances...either way.

Only one of the few are nearly colonized, the rests' substrate has been fully colonized, its only the vermiculite barrier that is contaminated. Wouldn't the bleach harm the mycelium?

Even though you cut out the green there will still be traces of it in your sample. DO NOT use that jar, start over.

Of course there will be traces of spores!!! That's unavoidable, even if there was no trich in the first place. My point is that the mycelium has colonized the entire substrate therefore the trich wont take over until at least the end of the first flush.

Also, the green wasn't even touching the substrate, it was only at the very top of the vermiculite layer.

Use my head? Look, you guys are just flat out telling me to re-start. Obviously I would rather not completely scrap all my hard work. No doubt your suggestions would be much more helpful with arguments to support them. I'd like to know how my points can be disproved. It would be more concerting to accept your opinions when along with evidence.

Here are my points:

- Most of the jars are 100% colonized
- For the few jars which are <100%, the uncolonized may be removed
- The contamination only covers the very top of the vermiculite barriers
- The contamination set in very late
- It may be easily and fully removed
- The contamination has not managed to take over any mycelium thus far

Any suggestions would be appreciated, just please don't shoot down my ideas without any rational judgment. I came here for help, so I'm willing to accept reasonable statements that are backed with tangible evidence.

Thank you.

So, if you don't like the advice, go ahead and go for it!! once there are some contams present, it is pretty likely they will show up again, but maybe you can salvage things in some way or another. let us know what happens.
