I got my horse poo! Check this out (pics).
    #4065434 - 04/17/05 12:06 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Well I finally found a horse boarding place that didn't use a bulldozer or heavy equipment to scoop up their poop. The had perfect piles of this stuff and I only picked from the best piles.

What do you guys think? Other than pasteurizing and a little bit of drying, do you see any further preparation on my part?

Thanks for all of the help and any advice offered.

Cha-ching! Good one, that's the mother load. Pretty soon you'll start to like the smell of horse poo, that's when you know you're in this hobby "deep"!

Just the people I was hoping to comment on my mother load. Thanks fellows. So what do you think, dry and go straight to pasteurizing? Any screening needed?

Like I said, I picked from the top and avoided any rocks, excessive hay, or dirt.

You only need to dry it if you're storing long term. Get that ammonia leached out w/ a good soak for a day and go to town.

Thanks for the link Diver. We just got hit with some 15 inches of snow on Monday, so the manure should be leached fairly well. Can I leach again to be safe without compromising the integrity of the manure?

I'll probably be storing for at least 6-8 months off and on during usage. Should I dry to be safe?

Thanks again people.

Forgive my ignorance Agar, but do I use your tek post drying/leaching, or can this be done with the stuff I currently have? I just want to make sure that I'm doing it right and I certainly don't won't to waste any time drying or leaching if I don't have to.

The horse manure I have is fairly weathered but moist from the recent snowfall we just had. Should I judge it by the smell or lack thereof for leaching? Obviously I going to be adding moisture anyways, so I assume the moisture, being free of any smell, is okay.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The stuff you have is the same as I have, only differance being the horse it came out of .

Just air dry it, screen (if you wish) & give it a soak, then pasturize it. So long as you don't get a urine or nasty fecal smell while doing so, it is good to go.

you stated that using wbs was better for the poo tek as it has higher nutrient content than brf...if i want to try the poo method but all i have at the moment is colonized brf/verm is it going to hurt anything?

it is better because it breaks up better and has more inoculation points.
the majority of the nutr. content is going to come from the :poop:

no problem.

This "leeching" idea is way overrated. Where I live, it rains seldom. When the poo dries out, I collect it. Or I just collect it fresher and dry it outside. Once it is dry, I shove it tight in a $1 blue clothes washing bag you can get at ShroomMart, tie it tight, and put it in a big tub of water at 170F. I leave it cooking for about an hour, pull it out, use the over rack over the kitchen sink to drain it for a couple hours, and dump the rest of the black "manure tee" boil water out. By pasteurizing the poo like this, you are leeching it yourself and need not worry about rain.

PS - and if you do collect it fresh, you can let it dry out in that same type of cloth clothes bag. Those bags are great for slow dessication of fresh poo. It'll be dry in a matter of weeks.
