Water content - any help is appreciated
    #4049593 - 04/13/05 10:51 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I'm growing (or trying to) with a cracked corn substrate and I have a question about getting the correct water content. The TEK I am using does not call for a specific amount of water (this is the cracked corn tek in this site's grain section), rather it says that one should simmer the grain for 30-35 minutes. however, the "slimy coating" appears on the grain much before the 30 minute mark, so i am concerned about oversaturating the grain and stalling or foiling colonization. I do have a tendency to be slightly paranoid about this sort of thing, so there's always a possibility that i am overreacting, and that everything is as it should be. What I would like to ask, is if anyone with experience could describe, or post pics of, properly hydrated grain. Of course, if anyone has extensive experience with cracked corn (rather uncommon, i know), any tips or advice they could offer would be greatly appreciated.
thank ya!

When you simmer the corn you are already adding the correct moisture to the corn. just be sure to rinse off the corn/slime after the simmer and drain for 10 minutes. then your corn will be properly hydrated.
