What should I do with my cat's prey? (now with pictures of death)

This is Zorro, one of my cats. He is six months and has been doing a lot of hunting lately. He has caught about 12 mice and 2 birds. But he always plays with the mice, and they die a slow death. Sometimes they even stay alive but are badly damaged. This morning I put one of his semi-kills out of it's misery. Now what should I do? Should I interfere with his playing and set the mice free outside, where they will probably die a slow death, or should I kill them quickly. Or should I let Zorro play, and kill the mice myself if they are still living afterwards?

Is he bringing these mice inside? I would just leave them to crawl away or watever since a live wounded mouse is a nice easy treat for an animal such as a osprey/hawk/racoon etc...

I live in a city in Holland. We don't have racoon/hawk/osprey here. Yes he brings them inside, and maybe he captures some inside. I think there are a couple in the crawlspace underneath my floor. I usually throw the mice in the bin outside when he's done, which can take up to an hour.

This is my other cat Suzy
She's 18 now, so she doesn't hunt anymore. But she used to catch a lot of birds and even bats. In the morning we'd sometimes find living bats hanging in the curtain.

Did you know that cats bring dead animals as an offering to their master? It's their way of saying thanks. Unfortunately I don't like dead birds.

Yeah me neither. Isn't that a myth or something? It's true though that my old cat once brought in a huge pigeon on my parents wedding day

No it's not a myth at all....they know you are their master and want to pay homage to you.
My cat I had when I was a kid would bring home ALL KINDS of things and would always leave the dead carcass on the porch right by the door. Chipmunks, rabbits, squirrels, weasels, mega rats, mice, you name it. Hunter killer!

i don't think it's like a homage thing... i think they are just socially used to share their food with the group, and since they consider you a part of the family they want to share the food with you... at least that's what i heard...

Found this on google, so i guess we are both right.
Cats often bring home their hunting trophies as a sign of appreciation. It is their contribution to a food supply - just as they would provide food for their kittens or for communally reared kittens. They also consider your home to be a safe den where food can be eaten without the threat of being stolen. The fact that you do not appreciate the gift, or you release it is possibly viewed as you being a rather wayward and inept kitten though many owners give their cat some cat food to compensate for the lost prey item.

I have a cat that brings home everything, mice, moles, shrews, bats, butterflies, squirrels, etc. No birds though. I remember the first time he brought home a squirrel it was pouring rain and the thing was still alive I wasn't sure what to do so I moved it so it was outta the rain (not inside just outta the rain) but it died. I always make sure he's inside or nowhere around before getting rid of his kills.

My older brother's dog caught a bird once. I've never seen that happen before. Cats are kickass, though.

I'm also scared that might happen. But I'd rather have that than him peeing and shitting everywhere in the house. Also the vet said that most male cats become kinder when their balls are snipped.
