High all, This is Mickey, a Silver Egyptian, Mau. Get it? Mickey Mau? The feline master of the house. Anyway, rumor has it they were the housecats of the Pharoahs, and when he struts his stuff, I believe it. Very athletic, lean body type. His markings are fair, not great, the show-type quality have darker spots and stripes.

I had a silver Egyptian Mau as well -- a male called "Dot Matrix" or Trix for short. He was an absolutely stunning cat... very spectacular.
My ex (before she was my ex) and I had attended a cat show and saw one being held up in the judging ring. We looked at each other and said, "Wow! Let's get one of those!" We arranged to get a "pet quality" kitten from the breeder, and picked him up a few months later. The breeder was very upset because he had the best markings she'd ever seen, better even than her Grand Champion, but he couldn't be shown because he had a very slight kink in the end of his tail, so we got him at the "pet quality" price.
He was a really GREAT cat -- very active, inquisitive, and affectionate with us, but he was always a bit stand-offish with other people. When we moved to the Dominican Republic and he became an "outdoor cat", he would sometimes literally stop traffic along the beach -- people would always want to know what kind he was, where they could get one, could they take his picture, etc. I swear that cat must have been photographed by over a thousand people. Ironically, I have no pictures of him myself -- my ex took them all with her when she bundled herself and Trix onto an airplane back to the Great White North in 1991. Sigh.
Your Mickey has some excellent markings -- the dots are distinct and well-separated, but you are right that the show cats have darker markings with greater contrast and a rounder shape to the dots. Doesn't matter, though -- look at it this way, if he was a show quality, you would never have been able to get him, right?
How old is Mickey? Have you had him since he was a kitten? Is his personality slightly "goofy" (like Trix was) or is he one of the more "dignified" type of Maus?

Egyptian Maus are a rare breed and the silver variety are the most desirable, more so than the smoke colored, which tend to look all charcoal in color. I paid $400 for him about five years ago, the females were more expensive, $500, as I remember. Because they are a rare breed, there is a limited gene pool, and health problems are not uncommon. Mickey has asthma and is allergic to nearly everything. His personality is positively regal, so he is standoffish to strangers. He doesn't back down from anyone including the neighbors cats or our dog. Thanks for the interest. I will post more pictures soon.

That is true, but the situation is getting better all the time. Several of the more conscientious breeders are "outcrossing" their Maus with more robust breeds, then working back to the more pure Mau phenotype. This is a lengthy process, and requires a lot of time and dedication. The outcrosses can't be shown as "Maus", so many breeders don't bother taking the time. I have nothing but respect for the ones who do take the time.
The breeder I got Trix from was located very close to Montreal, Canada. Her last name was Charbonneau, but I can't remember the name of her cattery. She and her husband also bred Abysinnians and Irish Wolfhounds, but the cats definitely run the household. It's hilarious to see a 140 lb dog cringe in fear at an 8 lb Mau queen who is pissed off.
We were lucky with Trix. No health problems at all, and he was sixteen when he died. Mrs. Charbonneau said there were quite a few Mau breeders in eastern Canada, and that they regularly loaned studs to each other to keep the gene pool as varied as possible.
I agree with you that the Silvers are more spectacular than the Smokes, but the Bronzes are pretty cool too -- they look like little leopards.
I miss Trix. He was a FUNNY little guy. He had the typical Mau voice, too -- he didn't say "meow", or "mew", it was kind of a cross between a bird's chirp and a yappy little dog's bark, sort of sounded like "Nyack!" -- very emphatic. I was pretty bummed when the ex took him with her, but he was always more attached to her than he was to me, so I guess it made sense. I know if he had stayed with me, he would have pined for her.
I look forward to seeing more pictures of Mickey.

Classic Mau body on Mickey, for sure. Deep, powerful chest, narrow hips, bull neck. He also has the typical "Mau necklace", as well as the brick red nose pad, gooseberry green eyes, tufted ears, and the bottoms of his feet and his toe pads are black.
Maus are very densely muscled. Picking one up is always a surprise, because they are MUCH heavier than they appear. Russian Blues are like that, too.
He's a beauty, no doubt about it.

DragonEyes, that cat is a beauty! Is it a silver tabby, or a Mau? I would guess an exceptionally striking silver tabby, but it is hard to say from that picture.

The cat found his home with me about 6 months ago. He has not grown large in that time, even though he is spoiled rotten. I think perhaps he is a classic: Runt Of The Litter. His name is Baby due to the fact hat I lack originality and also because he meows to that name.

SPeaking of Mau...Introducing LAU !!! His name is Lau-Chou (rhymes with Cow Shoe) and he is a pure-bred pound mutt! He has some psychlogical issues pertaining to food, and as dePICted in the pic, he is always longing for his playground, the nature of my backyard. THe sound of his name means "mouse" in mandarin chinese, another neat coincidence. An old friend taught me the term, but Ive not an idea on its correct spelling. He is fun! Thanks poster and repliers for the nice pics, very nice cats all around! (a petite cute one Dragon!) and Moe, lovely skunks! Although, I guess you don't appreciate their intelligence! ---Ec0

I'm at the bottom of the barrel on cat threads. I've been reading each one and made it this far. This cat is my favourite too.
