Q about cactus grafting- what species
    #4034451 -

what cactus species are good and easy to find, for fast grafting of peyote?

i was looking for a Pereskiopsis spathulata wich i heard was best for the job but i cant find this cactus anywhere. importing cactus from overseas can be difficult due to laws and regulations.

There not illegal or controlled in any way. They contain mesc but in low quanitites and not worth extracting so theres no regulations. You can buy them at mesagarden.com for a fair price.

pedros are always a good chioce for grafting because you can leave them on for years.

Myrtillocactus geometrizans is a good stock for any kind of grafting. Extremely common.

Most columnar cacti have been known to work well. Just be sure to cut the spines off of the top inch or two of the columnar cacti if it has them.

Has anyone or does anyone graft pedros on peruvians or even peruvians on peruvians to save space?

Can you graft more than 2 cacti on top of each other? IE: Peyote on Pedro on Peruvian.

what do you mean by "save space?"

yes, you can graft as many cacti together as you like. the result is usually an ugly frakencactus.

Well lets say I have 100 young Peruvians, and I graft them to have 50 bigger 2 story cacti, I now don't need as much lateral space to keep them in.
What do you think about doing this?

bad idea.

the purpose of grafting is to create a an attractive plant or facilitate faster growth of a scion.

when you graft two cacti together, unless you're grafting to areoles on the side, you cut the growth tip off the stock. so, the stock it isn't going to grow after that. well, it could put off side shoots, but if you graft while the cactus is 4" tall, it will remain 4" tall.

the scion will continue to grow, but growth would eventually be inhibited by the small stock it was grafted to.

here is what you would end up with:

your cactus would grow like this until the stock could no longer support the growth of the scion or until the small stock breaks under the weight of the scion.

if fast production was teh key it would probably be worth it. you could graft all your seedlings for a bit, and take mad cuttings off the stocks. you would have a shat load of cacti....but it would be better to use others that you dont "want" (;)) to use as stocks and leave teh wanted undamaged.
