grafting to pereskiopsis
    #9613202 - 01/15/09 07:23 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I have 5 pereskiopsis that I would like to use as grafting stock but I'm not exactly sure how old the seedlings being grafted should be.

I guess it was around the end of November that I planted some seeds.  The ones that sprouted did so within about a week.  So that's how old the seedlings are.  But they're pretty damn small still.  Are they okay to graft as long as they're big enough to hold & cut or should I wait a while longer?

you can graft them at a matter of days old.

so long as they are big enough to handle then you are good to go :yesnod:

Just had a couple quick questions that are related.

Is it normal for the graft to get a little shriveled and does it take a little while before it starts to grow actively?

Also, does it matter at all how much foliage is on the pereskiopsis when the graft is done?

the scion should plump up within a few days, if it hasn't within a week then they usually fail but sometimes it can take a bit longer.
and yes they can stall for some time before showing signs of growth, but don't worry if the scion is nice and plump, it should get going eventually.
longest stalled scion i have had was 9 weeks!
leafless pereskiopsis stocks work, but obviously they don't have such great growth potential as their ability to photosynthesize is severely reduced.

i hope that helps!
