Too big to graft to pereskiopsis?

I was going to remove the pup from this sickly-looking pedro, and graft it onto a pereskiopsis in case the pedro stock's health went south, but now by the time I feel the pereskiopsis are healthy enough to be grafted to, the pedro scion might be too big.

It's about the same diameter as a quarter.
The three pereskiopsis I have (thank you Llamabox )

I imagine since the pedro pup is so big, even if I did graft it, I couldn't do a flat-cut, but rather I'd have to make a conical divot into the scion, and carve the stock into a matching cone to fit into the scion (thus providing a better mating surface and a sturdier graft). But, since I've never grafted before, the additional difficulty is intimidating.
Any advice?

do you have more pics of the pedro stock? Personally, iw ould just leave the pup where it is at, as it will grow fast anyways. Pedro are damn hardy, and i doubt that the stock you showed is dying. Let the pup get about a foot tall, then cut, callous, and put it in its own pot. Repeat wtih next pup and soon you will have a lot of cactus.

I don't think that the stock is dying per se, but it's not in the best shape, and growth has been sluggish.

Since those photos were taken, the sunken brown area has increased in size.
If I can graft, then I want to try... I'd like to jump-start the little guy's growth.

Here is a short quote I found. "** I tried to graft offsets with soft tissues on Pereskiopsis cut cone-shaped (sharpened like a pencil). The stock pierces the scion. The result is superb. It is convenient to graft this way offsets whose cambial ring is bigger or smaller than the one of the stock. Using this method you can achieve a full match of cambial rings. But it is difficult to graft this way offsets with hard tissues. I use only a month old seedlings taken from Botanical garden which are 15-20 cm long. It is inconvenient to use older plantlets as they become rather hard. (by Alexandr Krupoderov, Novosibirsk)

While not so aesthetically pleasing, i think your pedro stock looks fine

Just root the pup. Use the root stock for seedlings.

Your pereskiopsis looks like it needs more light.
Just let the pup go.
Good luck
