To graft or not
    #14436719 - 05/11/11 08:08 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So I have 2 loph seedlings... and some pereskiopsis... I want to graft them, but to be honest I have never made a graft before... I have read a lot and watched instructional videos... enough to feel confident that I can do it...

but what do you guys recommend me??? should I just wait and graft to easier stock when they get bigger?

also how do they manage to handle this stuff while grafting??? pereskiopsis have some nasty spines and also little needles that break off and stick to your skin

I'd wait if you only have two unless you don't care about them.

The chance that your two seedlings will make it your first time grafting in general especially grafting in pereskiopsis is slim and even pros don't have a 100% success rate. I think a >60% success rate is pretty good. I think I lost at least several seedlings before I had a successful pereskiopsis/seedling graft. I lost another when I messed up a seedling graft the other day by being clumsy and knocking the scion off the stock (it's a lot easier than it sounds).

Put down a larger batch of whatever seeds so that you can practice grafting later.

Thinner leather gloves are great for handling pereskiopsis, but I don't wear them when grafting. There's really no reason to touch the pereskiopsis. I just a finger tip and the blade in my other hand when sliding the seedling on.
