I'd say first...but I'd say a blender before either of those.

Check local pawn shops, the are like $5, can cut like butter.. Careful tho, I'm sure they would take a finger off like butter also.

tried it here.. dry blender wouldnt do anything with it at all.. added water and blended up great! just poured the blended straw/water mixture into the pot and pasteurize... gunna try it for the next bags i do, thanks!

one question.. can straw be too chopped?

Interesting! I use a h202 bottle to push it down as I blend in bursts..so it works.

Long as its not powderized, its not to chopped IMO. You can see where I like it in the picture above, pretty chopped.
