Why don't you just boil the jars in a pot with a lid? That will work almost as good as a PC, and lessen chance of contamination.

I think he's saying just do BRF PF-tek style to start while you are waiting to save up cash for a PC.

Well, let's take it this way: I dont know for sure. But it is not stated anywhere that it is feasable. Straw is always only refered to as bulk. I suppose, that as straw only gets colonised by the open, cut, ends spores are less likely to "attach" here, id reckon. Plus, biology-wise, straw is a different carbo-hydrate than grains are.We for instance cant digest straw, but grains we can. Maybe spores can "digest" straw either as it is too complex for them.

You're not likely to get germination of spores directly on straw. Without a PC you can use PF jars, or hominy and vermiculite if you want to do grains without a PC.

Then chop up the cakes or break up the hominy and use that as spawn to straw.

Cut straw into the smallest possible pieces. Then soak for 24 hrs completely under the water. Add Karo with the water you put in the substrate. I would say 50/50 Karo water then shake. You dont have to add much water if even any. You might be better just adding Karo to straw. Then pc at 15 psi for about 90 min. Mycelia does grow on straw you just need something to provide more nutrition for germination and that is what the Karo does. However you would be better trying grain or BRF. Although I have never tried it or heard of anyone trying this so you may be surprised.

i would say your chances of success are inversely proportional to the number of contaminants .
the majority of the endo-spores in straw are in the leaves, leaf nodes(knuckles) and the seeds .remove as much of that as you can .
you might want to try bleach/lime bath, and maybe supplement with a little brf .
inoculate in jars then spawn to straw .

Usually straw doesnt contain the seed head. When grain is grown in mass they cut the fields with a combine which seperates the seed head from the stalk. The stalk is used for straw and the grain for feed. When the head is left on it is called hay. When the two ends of the stalk are open the vascular bundles can fully drain from both sides before rotting occurs, forming straw.
