finly cut straw? mix spawn and case all in 1?

breaking into straw. it's been in the neighbors barn for at least 5 years, but seems like it was kept dry. what is optimal size? i've heard 3-4" or even whole. smaller seems like it'd be easier to work with. How about 1" or so. This is really small scale, so cutting it isn't a problem.
Also, can i mix the straw and spawn and case all at once? I've only heard of mixing it in a bag, letting colonize, then casing.

1 in will be fine. But if you are casing at the same time you could get a very uneven flushes.
The straw sounds to be old but I do not think it will harm anything.

If you decide to case anyway keep an eye on it and as the mycelium pops through your casing layer cover it with a little more casing material until it all comes through nice and even.

Thanks. i was a little worried that it wouldn't get enough air exchange, or that too fine of straw would cause it to contaminate. I'll probably start with a 1 spawn to 2 hay ratio just to be safe.
