I can't say from experience but I have heard that hay dosen't work so well.....wheatstraw works great but it does have a learnin curve...my advice......add a top layer of grain or grain+field capacity verm covering the straw(I recommend this for the extra water plus you'll need less grain)......the top of the straw colonizes the slowest if exposed and is the most prone to contams

EDIT: also make sure to chop the straw about 2"'s and try and do it by hand so you can desead it as well....it takes some time the but the results speak for themselves.....plus i find it kinda relaxing just sitting outside cutting straw.....also make sure to by some heavy duty scissors or your in for some sore hands and possible blisters

Wheatstraw does have nutritional value just not a whole lot. I've seen many an excellent flush off straight straw! Best if supplimented if ya want more than two flushes, and when it stops producing throw it outside with some horse poo using it as spawn and get yourself a OD going!

I should of said not much instead of no.Hay also holds more water than straw.
