Obtaining wheatstraw...

How? Where? Dumb question, I know... but the internet mushroom shops seem overpriced for straw (shipping is more expensive than the product). I have a faint braincell telling me that someone mentioned Michaels carrying it...true? My googleries are failing me at this point. Help?

Yeah, you can get it at Michael's but it's over 5 bucks for a 6" X 6" X 12" bale. It comes out to be a fair amount of straw when you break it up, but that's still a lot for a little.

Wrong. A lot of them may have it in certain areas but certainly not all. Wheatstraw is not that easy to find in my area at all. I found some around Halloween last year and stocked up. Since then I haven't yet found another source. I haven't even seen any at the feed store. Most farmers here feed their cows and horses hay, which is not quite the same. I'm sure that this is true for many other places as well.

I live in about as rural area as you can get and there is none to be seen. I'm always on the prowl, though. I'm going out to an even smaller, more rural, farm town tomorrow and I will check there at the feed store.

Ok, whats the difference between hay and wheat straw.
In spanish, hay and straw are the same word, so here they call everything hay, no matter what it actually is.
How could I visually ID wheat straw against hay? Any pics?

Yes... Michael's carries it... that's where I get mine, until I find a better priced place.
They are small bales for like $5, but they certainly work well enough. I found that just under two of the 6"X6"X12" would put about 5-6 inches of substrate into a large rubbermaid tote after being pasteurized. So it's $10 for one bin of straw that can yield over 7-8 dried ounces (as mine did last time, and I'm a complete amateur. Someone experienced should be able to get much more). I don't know if math has changed so much from when I went to school, but $10 investment for $700-$800 worth (comparitively... I don't sell, but I would spend that much to obtain that amount) of return is just fine by me
