Yep pretty damn close to 10 years.  I know when we finally see them we will want to savour that feeling for the rest of our lives

I saw them twice on the Lateralus tour.. it was absolutely amazing.. the visuals they had in the background were fucking fabulous.. tons of symbolism, sacred geometry, alex grey stuff, etc. .

Wow. Jesus was lost? Good thing Maynard "found" him. Sorry I couldn't help myself. I personally don't believe it, they always do something like this every year for April fools day, but hey G.W. got relected I suppose anything is possible right?!?! Either way I'm still Maynard will still be making some excellent music.

as for Eulogy IMHO it's about "the shadow" the one that lurks within every "individual". (or Ego so to speak)... Ego had a lot to say, a lot of nothing

Then please explain this verse in terms of your interpretation of the song

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me.

if you notice my first reply to fearfect, i also believe this song to be about the ego... here is how i interpret those lines...

"Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud"
the ego is what basically separates us from everyone and everything else... without the ego we would know that we are all one and part of everything else... you ever notice how the ego always has something to say about everything... mostly the ego is the first thing to react and pass judgment on any subject at hand... it is a really loud voice that is hard to turn off... i wish i could, to be honest...

"and I Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with"
basically most people identify themselves with their own ego... they believe that they are the ego... that they are their jobs, homes, material belongings and so on... when in ultimate reality we are what is beyond... our ego and our mind are but tools for us to forget where we came from and thus experience reunification with the whole... and for that we must identify with the ego...

"Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me. "
now don't get me wrong... the ego is not all bad.. it has a purpose... without it we would just be... if any of you read "the power of now" by eckhart tolle you'll know what i mean... after he lost his ego he lost every sense of individuality... he spent years sitting around in the park just being... just enjoying the peace of mind and the nature... it was only after quite a long time that he decided to pass his wisdom to everyone else... so basically our ego is also the thing that has goals in our lives, that wants to accomplish things... in fact, the mere wish to be enlightened comes from the ego... because an enlightened being would not wish for something it would just be... the ego has goals, the ego leads the way... but to ascend the ego must die... it must be crucified... for all sins and all lies... goodbye... so maynard poses the question to the own ego: "will you now... would you die for me?"

so that is my interpretation of that song and especially those lines... and to be honest i think the cross analogy was put in there for 2 reasons... first, the martyr side of the ego (we all have experienced the ego putting itself as the victim) and second, so that people would make that initial judgment that the song is "about jesus"... maynard like to fuck around with people... that is exactly why i try to see behind every lyric he has... not go for the "apparent" meaning... anyone with me on this?

That was a great response.

Could it also have to do with Ron L Hubbard and scientology, hes mentioned in Aenima and some other songs

you still think maynard doesn't despise jesus? Are you just in denial or something?? From tool's lyrics page:

"Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life. Open my eyes and blind me with your light and your lies."

I guess you can believe whatever you want to believe.

edit: oh maybe he was just kidding or something. he doesn't really mean it of course. its an analogy for how he hates religion, not any religion in particular; even though he blatently states jesus christ.

stop taking lyrics out of context, man!!!

the song is called opiate and is not about jesus, it's about religion... religion is the opiate for the masses...

read a little into maynard's biography and you will see that it is the blind following of religious doctrines he hates... he doesn't hate jesus christ... his mom had a seizure when he was eleven and she basically said she deserved it and it was god's way of punishing her for her sins... that's what judith is about, too... his mom was called judi... kinda makes sense when you consider the lyrics...

F*ck your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

i think that maynard sees jesus just as what he was... an ascended master... like krishna, buddha and all the others... it's what the church made of him he despises... as do i...

edit: and you're putting words in my mouth i didn't even say... it was someone else who said "not any religion in particular"... it's quite obvious he hates christianity...

don't christianity and jesus go hand in hand though?

at least jesus is what separates christianity from other religions.
