Wow, he said "I wish it was an April Fool's joke", NOBODY has ever said anything like that before to make their joke more believable.

actually in the whole song he doesn't even mention the name jesus once... for me that song is about the death of one's own ego... it seems like it's about jesus, but you know how maynard likes to provoke people

Quote:
"Die Eier von Satan"

that song is actually a recipe for hash-cakes... they are round little cakes and thus are called "eier"... which means "eggs" or in this case "balls"... (we call gonads "eggs" in germany)

Quote:
"Jesus Christ why don't you come save my life now, open my eyes blind me with your light now.. Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow, what you need is someone strong to guide you, like me... my gods will, becomes me, when he speaks, he speaks through me. he has needs, like i do. WE BOTH WANT, TO RAPE YOU."

that song is about religion... not about jesus christ... i personally believe in jesus, but i despise what the church has done of his teachings... everything he ever said about meditation, reincarnation and inner light was taken from the bible in order to manipulate people...

of course tool has "occultic" themes... but these themes are more esoteric than anything else...

"we are eternal, all this pain is an illusion"... wasn't that what jesus was trying to teach us?

46 & 2... check the lyrics... there are esoteric books like "the flower of life" which say that when all humanity achieves christ consciousness we will have 46 & 2 chromosomes and not 44 & 2 like we do now...

i can't stand people who turn tool's philosophy into the dark side... tool is about light and inspiration... not about darkness...

He says "Come down, get off your fucking cross".
How many people in history are famous for being nailed to a cross? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize what he's poking at.

someone who loved jesus would probably steer clear of anything to do with satan's balls

He is specifically mocking JESUS CHRIST. How can you get any more obvious then that?? The song is a satire of how blindly people follow this man, when they actually have almost nothing to back them up.

do you know what the christ conciousness is? I suggest you read some Bob Frissel. Trust me, Jesus doesn't play a large role in his books. Yea, alot of there stuff is esoteric ramblings which I find facinating. Believe what you want about them, theres no way I can change your mind.

I can't stand people who have such infinite knowledge as to determine what the "dark side" is. Just because things don't match up with your beliefs doesn't make them EVIL or DARK.

I agree that tool is inspiring, but i can't bring myself to believe a groundless claim that they secretly have a passion for jesus

I was always under the impression that Tool came from the dark path and progressed towards the light over the years.

evil or good, tool is very inspiring. i don't know why there is a debate over what maynard or any of the band members think. its up to them. we can only sit back, listen and interpret however our misguided minds will lead us.

as a last note, i'd recommend you all listen to the unedited "Judith" from a Perfect Circle.

We still don't know if George W. Bush fulfilled his military obligation in the 60's. How can anyone say what exactly happened 2000 years ago?

If you're going to analyze lyrics, look at the whole song, not just a line or two that can be taken out of context. I.E.

Eulogy

He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him.

So long.
We wish you well.
You told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well then, so long.
Don't cry.
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried.

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
We'll miss him.
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart.
We'll miss him.

No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all.

So loud.
You sure could yell.
You took a stand on every little thing
And so loud.

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me.

Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fuckin lie.

Don't you step out of line.
Don't you fuckin lie.

You've claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised to hear your own eulogy?

You had alot to say.
You had alot of nothing to say.

Come down.
Get off your fuckin cross.
We need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr.

To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For your sins and your lies. [sic]
Goodbye...

I've always seen this song as being directed at some sort of cult leader/preacher who's only in it for the power/money/whatever, not making fun of Jesus. I'd say, IMO, that Tool is anti-religion, not anti-Jesus.

Erm... Tool is more about spiritual growth than denying religion in any way. Every song has a deep hidden meaning...
So you really believe that Stink fist is about fist fucking???

I really don't think he's mocking Jesus at all... rather the people that follow him blindly.

Also Maynard said "without judgment" so I believe Tool IS about light, and holds no grudge against Jesus Christ (or anything like that)
Btw, I'm not religious, so I'm not just protecting Christianity... I don't even care about it.

as for Eulogy IMHO it's about "the shadow" the one that lurks within every "individual". (or Ego so to speak)... Ego had a lot to say, a lot of nothing

To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For your sins and your lies.
Goodbye...

Ego must die to ascend... well, that's just me I guess

maynard would laugh his ass off at this whole thread. ridicularity is the word of the day.

p.s. - tool is an amazing band with deep philosophical undertones. what exactly they believe is not apparent or easy to figure out from the lyrics. stop trying, take what you can from it personally, and enjoy

Here's the thing...Tool is more complex than simple interpretations can allow, as is all good art and life itself.

If Maynard could simply say "I believe X, or I think Y," there would be no need for him to make songs, weave them into complex themes, and release albums. I never understand how it is that people who are so enthralled by Maynard's music miss his most fundamental message: life is complex beyond words, hence music.

the lyrics are worded in a way to encompass many religions without specifically naming one, but the imagery and allusions cannot be denied.

No interpretation is wrong as long as it's yours. To quote Robert Sedlack:

"There are as many roads to paradise as there are people on the planet. Hallelujah. We?re all captains of eternity, baby. Fuck the long lines. Keep walking. Stay strong.? (The African Papers)

Then please explain this verse in terms of your interpretation of the song
