ID of Oaxaca Mushrooms (pic?
    #401199 - 09/22/01 09:52 PM (23 years, 6 months ago)

Hi,

after some hours of hunting in the sothern sierra in Oaxaca I found some mushrooms I can't ID. They aren't P. caerulescens because they show a kind of small "papilla". For P. zapotecorum are they too small. For P. wassoniorum are they too big.

The hat is about 3 to 4 cm an the stem about 10 cm long.

I also found some that look like P. wassoniorum:

And of course some P. caerulescens:

Thanx for the help in advance...

2,3,4,9,10,11,12 appear to be the same species, and the middle pic I'm not sure about. I don't think theres one caerulescen in that collection anywhere, the stems look way to "scalely" to me, but there are many variations with this species. I think you may have something entirely different, maybe even a new species. They sure are strange looking.

Hi,

Number 15 is a Pan. campanulatus (or papilionaceus), not necesarly psychoactive, but maybe interesting for cultivation...
One day later I found a possible Pan. antillarum, but I shoot only an analog photo.

I took sporeprints from some of the above mushrooms, and I'm gaining a culture, so maybe after cultivation the identity can be found.
They grow on the same places as P. caerulescens, namly on loamy soil, which collapsed ca. one year before.

The spores are dark viloet; there is a bluing reaction, and the locals know them for psychoactive; so I think they are Psilocybes. I found interesting that the stem has this "scaly" structure, which has P. zapotecorum (Heim), but they appear to have a too sharp tip, at least 2,3 and 4. The cap of 12 looks very similar to the one of P. semperviva from Heim and Cailleux (look photos in Advance cultivation forum posted by me), but the stem is too "scaly".
Well I hope I can cultivate them...

Oh yeah, they are definitely Psilocybes, and active ones at that. I was just saying that they don't look like any caerulescens I've ever seen. A damn interesting find though! How many hours of searching did you have to put in to find these beauties? You damn mexicans make it look so easy sometimes, like your flooded with magic mushroom species down there :)

Good luck with you cultivation attempts!

LK,

We walked about 3 hours, but after 1 hour we found the first one. I have to say that someone of the town was with me ;) And he had an extremely trained eye, and has his prefered places. I wanted to shoot some photos of the mushrooms before picking them up, but they were in very unaccesible places...
Someone said that the locals don't look for them, they "feel" or "smell" them ;)
The season is actually mid agust, and I was surprised that we found some, although we have mid to end september.

After reading a bit, I am almost positive those are Psilocybe zapotecorum.

Heres what PMOTW by paul stamets says about the stem....

Stem: surface floccose above and strongly scabrous-strigose near the base."

and here is what is says about the cap...
"Cap: highly variable in form, conic to convex to subumbonate, and sometimes papillate and convolted in age"

I was reading yesterday the original description of Heim, and found also that they shoud be P. zapotecorum, specially because of the fibrous and strongly scabrous-strigose stem.
Thanx for the help,

Elektrolurch

p.d. I have still some nice analog photos too...
