Compost ;)
    #3984666 - 03/29/05 12:06 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Looked up some of Agar's recipes

I'm going to do a compost type-o-pile in a recycling bin

So far i'll be throwing in h/poo, fruits, table scrapes minus the poultry(sp?)...Anything else you guys recommend i throw/dont throw in there?...

-Gnostic

Hmmm..Does a compost pile go bad? I know bacteria goes in there, but is there a certain point where you'd go "ugh, i'm not gonna use that"...?

Thankx in advance

egg shells, shredded newspaper, chicken shit(I've got hens)leaves,grass... when making a compost pile you want to think in terms of carbon and nitrogen. anything green and recently cut in nitrogen while anything dead or brown is carbon. the correct ratio is 4 to 1. that's 4 parts nitrogen to 1 part carbon. the smaller the pieces and the better they are mixed the better your results. if you can get your pile to heat up to over a hundred deg. for a couple days then the ball will be in motion. just keep turning it to spread the bacteria around. I think this composting will be right up your alley, since it's basically just trying to get the correct balance of substrates together.

hey thanks-

that helped to understand the process of composting more, and it's application in mycology, but it hardly seems like a how-to.

you'll have to let me know if you come across something else

i dont think you are supposed to put any kind of meat based ingrediants in a compost pile, same goes for carnivore/omnivore poo. i may be wrong though

usualy the meat products simply attract animals that'll dig things out.

i didn't know why, i just remember my dad saying something about no meat byproducts in his compost when i was younger. i always just assumed it had something to do with animal fats and undesired bacteria/smells.

learn something new everyday

Hey Pc, Found this two 8-)
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...9ad2f5fd5c56b13

I think i'm ready to try it out heh...

Here's what i'm throwing in, not sure of how much of each yet though.

Quote:

ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4

 Isn't that in fresh poo? Cuz i've got some
"Basic mushroom compost is made up of wheat straw, horse manure and gypsum (calcium sulfate)."

Quote:

Straw:
serves as a carbon source.

I've got some straw, lil old.

Quote:

Other Carbohydrate Sources:
Rice straw, molasses, brewer's grains, cottonseed meal (provides the fatty acid - linoleic acid -which is reported to stimulate yields.)

, Should i throw in some honey/molasses?

Quote:

Manures:
nitrogen source, provides organisms essential to composting horse - most commonly used, fresher the better poultry - higher in nitrogen and phosphorous than horse, not so rich in potash (provided in wheat straw), faster and hotter than horse, use dry pig and sheep - must be used before they become sticky - used partly dry

I've got fresh and poo....using a recycling bin, how much

Where can i find gypsum?

I'm [probably just gonna end up burning my myc., but ill give it a try

Gypsum? Hospital.. :P I think gypsym is added as a calcium source to balance PH. You could also add eggshells or sumting.
Without the chickenshit less calcium is needed, cause chickenshit is rather acid.

Hmz maybe me goes to xperimenting with some compost too soon! Have a very nice source of horsepoo, in all ages...

thanks for the link, iggy

nice to see something at the top of the boards that
most <(qualifier) everyone can learn from

you too, sterile- i like how detailed that method is, although, not having a warm-mist hum., i'm leaning towards something else.
