Pressure cooker water level?
    #3979638 - 03/28/05 09:32 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

How much water should I put in a 4qt pressure cooker?

All I am doing is steralizing a syringe and some water in a jar.

after everything you're pc'ing is in the cooker, you wanna have about 1 inch of water up the sides of your jars... make sure you wrap that syring up good too, and keep it up away from the water... GL bro :stoned:

Can I just set the needle on top of the jar?

Yep, just wrap in foil and place on top of your jars for the PC cycle.

I am using an older Mirro 4qt and I set it all up, and put my gas stove on high.

After a while the red rubber thing popped up, and lots of steam started escaping from under the rocker nipple's threads. Then very quickly, water started escaping from the threads, really bubbly water. So that made me nervous therefore I turned off the heat.

Is it supposed to do that?

No. I've got the same PC and I haven't had any problems...Once your rocker starts moving, you're supposed to DROP the heat down to where it's just rocking...that let's you know you're maintaining pressure. The red emergency valve is a precaution, it shouldn't be activating at all. try lowering your temperature to a med-high to medium once the rocker gets going.

The rocker never gets going, it just starts making alot of noise and water comes out from the threads.

If it's bubbly in the first few minutes, you're fine. the lid isn't hot enough to evaporate the water from the valve, so it looks like something is wrong.. after a few minutes, that should stop, and you should be fine. But do an inspection on your seal, emergency valve, and nipple to make sure everything is tight and in good working order. Steam Burns suck.

sounds like maybe the gasket on the lid might be going south. mine started bubbling out of the side when it did that...
