Depends on how dry your able to get them with just fan drying. I find that i have no need for a desiccant where i live. Ambient RH is usually around 20% or so. I just let them dry at a temp of about 80-85 degrees for a few days and have no problem getting them cracker dry. Store them for a year and a half and they were still fine. But, in some areas it may be needed. I also dont store in the freezer or fridge, haven't found a need.

3 months is considered long term...I'd have to say yes. It is necessary...

Actually no they dont, all i have to do to dry shrooms is put them under a fan for 3-5 days, and they're completely dry. I live in a desert, thats why i said in my environment.

Edit: Im sorry i didn't say my environment, i said "But, in some areas it may be needed." Inferring that if you live in a very humid place it may be necessary.

Dry in dehydrator - until CRACKER DRY, vaccum seal in autoclave or food/saver bag. Place bag in clean dry quart jar, screw lid on TIGHT. Store in cool dry place - or freezer. Simple as that, without any desiccant.
