Cloneing Gourmets ?? ? ?

I am trying to get my mom a present. Ar ethey're any gourmets i can walk up to the super market and get those and clone em? I dont have time to order it.

PS: can i just drop in karo or malt mixture?

also if you give me a good strin please include what they grow on. Rye star so on. thanks

if you get them fresh, you can clone any mushroom you find at the store. so, you need to go to the store and see what is available to clone.

yes, it will grow in a karo mix.

rye is good for spawn.

thankyou so much i bought some shitake and some bottlecaps to grow hopefully my mom will like it. Thanks guys. Oh ps should i just use a piece of the gill or what for the cloneing?

You may want to look further into this befoe investing a lot of effort into it.

You need to be very sterile when cloning...

no, don't mess with the gills. they are probably contaminated.



imagine that is a shiitake...a red one with yellow gills. :smirk:

you want to get a piece of flesh from inside the cap, where that blue circle is. don't get any of the outer part, because it will be contaminated.

i cloned my shiitake culture from a store-bought mushroom by cutting off the stem, then soaking the cap in peroxide. i put a spoon on it to sink it.

after soaking it, i pulled it out and tore it in half. you can cut it if you have a sterile scalpel. then, i cut a piece from the inside and put it on agar. you can just drop yours in the karo mix. don't cut out a big piece.  :eek: <---- a piece the size of that smiley is all you need.

that's all you need to do.

i don't know what mushroom is called a bottle cap, but the same method will work for that one too.

Wrong.

Even cutting the mushroom with a sterile scalpel can drag contams from the outside of the mushroom into the inside.

Its best to just tear the mushroom in half with your fingers then clone from the inside tissue.

no, not wrong. have you ever tried it?

you can cut it with a sterile scalpel after a sterilizing soak in peroxide or bleach solution. i did it plenty of times (with an almost negligible contam rate) before i realized i could eliminate the step by just tearing the mushroom in half.

"a sterile scalpel can drag contams from the outside of the mushroom into the inside." tearing a mushroom can also land some contams on the inside.

i stated that i tear the mushroom in half. of course, i feel this is the better way to go....if you can tear the mushroom cleanly and smoothly. some people have a problem doing this. they end up smashing the mushroom's cap or violently jerking the cap apart or mangling it, spreading contams all over the inner flesh. people who do this are better off just slicing the mushroom.

Thanks fo the help i have mine in an incubtor right now. Only i did it my way because i read all this after words and i hope my way works. Seriously thanks for the help.

Neather are wrong both work just fine, sterelising the mushroom in a bleach soak kills the bad stuff just fine and a hot sterile knife will drag virtualy no contams. Id be more worried that my fingers will contam the tissue. But I have done both and both are fine.

hey fyi my way seemed to work. I also printed up a portabella from the store and scraped a healthy bit into some Malt/dex and i got some sweet ass mycelium goin. Injected my PF tek mix today will update later as to the growth. Is straw a good bulk sub for POrt?

i use composted turkey manure & straw for ports.
i've never tried using straw alone.
