alcohol extraction of lion's mane
    #3965409 -

Tincturing Lion's Mane without heat, will it still release the polysaccs? IE. is it effective as a neuro boost without the heat breaking down the wall? Also any special considerations for alcohol extracts of mycelium?
Thanks for memories, Jelly

christopher hobbs and other herbalist's have methods where they use a double extraction, first a tincture then adding a decoction. That way you get both.. Very interesting in medicinal extractions, please post any experience you have with your tincture. Are you cultivating the Hericium?

Aren't those compounds mycelial in origin?
Extracting mycelium would probably be a better route?

That said 70% ethanolic extracts of Hericium erinaceus that I've made appear to be full of some thickening material I would think would fit it containing some sort of polysaccharides. I've never had them analyzed so do not know.
I've also squeezed them and then cut the juice with 95% ethanol for a similar product but with abundant flocculence.

Maybe I read something wrong or misinterpreted what was said in this article but please see:

I've come across information on YouTube suggestion that duel extraction from the fruiting bodies is the best scenario, as it is claimed alcohol extraction allows for heavy molecules to pass the blood brain barrier.

I am still in the process of reading about this. But from what I can recall from the studies I read the polysaccharides and the other triterpenoids are largely dependent on what state of growth the mushroom is in and how it was cultivated. Polysaccharides, hericenones and erinacines being extracted mainly from the fruiting body and polysaccharides and hericeons being extracted from the mycelium, the mycelium being void of erinacines. There was also mention of concern with "fermented mycelium" producing unwanted compounds that could be hazardous, but I forget there names.

There's a couple studies done that show positive results from just ingesting the powdered fruiting bodies at a rate of 2-3 grams per day. In the one study at 2 grams per day it showed an anti-depressant effect in women. And the other one at 3 grams per day showed an improvement in "mild cognitive impairment" or mild Alzheimer's. The first study doesn't mention how the powder was prepared, but the second one mentions that fruiting bodies were freshly dried at 60c, powdered and formed into a pill that contained 96% mushroom powder, 2.4% fat and 1.6% silicone dioxide.

I've yet to read some studies that mention their method for aqueous and ethanol extractions. But there is a lot of studies out there that use these forms of extractions in the study. If you look on the forums here the tincture methods can vary quite a bit, from simply boiling or simmering at 90c for a few minutes or pressure cooking for 14 hours at 15 psi for the aqueous extraction. And for the ethanol part macerating for weeks to months. It would be nice to find a study that shows positive results that describes their extraction method in some detail.

Sorry, I realized I got that backwards, the mycelium being void of hericeons. When I get the chance I'll try to post links to the studies I was reading and have access to.

nice one.
Be good to read those studies.

Do you get all of the benefits of the extracts, tinctures, teas, etc. by just gently cooking and eating the damn thing?

Simply put, no.
1)Some are not edible.
2)Alcohol extracts compounds not soluble in water.
3)How are you going to always have fresh on hand to cook daily.
4)Yes , you can get some of the benefits from eating fresh. Because of the above it is better to dual extract.
