Lion's mane question

For the past three months I have been trying to grow Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) grain spawn. Each attempt failed because primordia formed before the grain is fully colonized. By the time the grain is colonized some of the primordia get contaminated with green mold.
Any tips to prevent or delay this massive primordia formation?

When i did it i would shake the jars every few days. I thought the jars had co8we8 mold 8ut it was nice lions mane mycelium. I just started 4 quarts of rye with lions mane last night so i will let you know how it turns out.

Make sure your jars are in darkness all of the time too.

Hi Owl
I'm used to grow them. As you have probably seing in my 100$ growing room, I grow hundreds of pounds of them per year. From my part I do not have success, like you, growing them on grain. Now how I do:
1. Sterelize 300ml. of water (in a 500 ml. mason jar ph 6-7)with a pellet or 2 (make a powder with)of high protein cat or dog food in it.
2. When cool, putt in the jar 3-4 pieces of your Lion's Mane agar (1 cm. square each). Every 2 days shake the jar a way that the liquid is turning in the jar. To left and then right. Be carefull don't let the water touch the lid.
3. After 7 or 8 days sterelize about 15-20 350 ml. (in 5oo ml mason jars)sawdust with 10% wheat bran, 1% gypsum. When cool, shake the liquid (turning)inject 10 cc of this liquid on the top of the sterilize sawdust (need the biggest needle, otherwise it can stock in the needle some times), don't shake the sawdust. I've better results whitout shaking during colonization. Just let sit.
It takes between 7-10 days to see some small gray-white thin grow on the top. It takes about 3 weeks to fully colonize. After you can make a lot of spawn with those (colonization is faster for next transfers). I do have 100-1l. spawn second transfer undergoes now.
If you try this method, post in 3-4 weeks to tell us how it goes. Then I'll tell you how I have 4 to 5 flushes (2-3 Pds. of mush per 6 Pds. block)
Good luck Later+

How many golf ball sized mushrooms does it take to make a pound? I normally poke 4 or 5 five holes in each bag.
Lion's mane makes a crap ton of primordia. They crust up the whole surface normally. I just break that junk in. If you get green mold. There must be a flaw in your method of sterility.
Thats a crazy method Mico!!!! I didn't like the growth of LC to sawdust. To wispy and to long to colonize. But it sounds like you have it down pat!
My method is LC>Grain>Dark room> Make production blocks> Inoculate> let sit in a pile> Grow room

If I can get 4-5 flushes it's because I don't have that problem. With grain you'll have more chance to get green mold.

Many thanks to you all.
Time to look for high protein cat or dog food and a large needle..
