1 1/2 to 2 inches thick should be good....I bet that mycelium will rip through the casing layer pretty quick.

How did you prepare the birdseed? Just curious because I haven't had much luck with it when I tried to use it.

I soaked it in the quart jar for approx 12 hours.. drained off water. Then added just a few tablespoons of fresh water in the jar. It only comes up about an inch in the seed. Seems to be just about right moisture. I also PC`d for only 10 minutes at first. relieved pressure and took hot pads and gave them a good shake.. Then replaed them in the PC and let it come back to a full hiss and finished of for an additional 45 minutes. I let them cool down some, not all the way cool ,and shook again. The seed was nice a seperate and no clumping.Innoculated with a half cc in each hole.Colonization was fast......20 days and ready to case.. Hope this helps you out Zypher:) Once you get the water right with grains you will never go back to BRF/verm in my opinion. Also it`s easy to do more jars of seed from another jar. Oven tek works great....  and wipe a teaspoon or tablespoon down with alcohol. or flame and cool  and transfer a nice amout into another jar of seed.... works like a champ and much faster that way than using a syringe again. Let the new jar go for a few days and shake it good. Mycelia hauls ass this way:cool:
