Need Suggestions for a proper casing tek
    #670096 - 06/09/02 02:04 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

It's been a while since I have attempted the growth of mushrooms, but what I did in the past was put finch seed and water into 1-Quart Mason Jars.

So when i'm ready to fruit I have many Quart jars full of colonized grain, ready to rock and roll. The only way to go at this point is to case my jars. Fruiting them in the jars yeilds nothing at all comapred to the casings.

I was thinking, to crush the spawn up in the jar with a long knife, then empty the chunks into a plastic zip-lock bag, now I break the colonized grain up even more..

Do you guys recommend that I use a bottom layer of vermiculite, or use the spawn as the bottom layer?

So, there you have it, all I need to know is if putting the spawn in the zip-lock bag is a good idea, and if i need a bottom casing layer.

Thanks. peace out

If you can aquire some dung, you should spawn that grain. But cased grains can fruit very well alone, better than cased cakes IMO

A bottom casing layer is a matter of preference. Dude dont use one but others do. It may help keep the substrate moist, but then again you could contam under there and not know it.

If the mycelium is very strong and wont break up by shaking then yes break it up with a nife or fork. You can put it in a bag and break it, but dude has never found that necassary.....maybe just wash your hands er sumthin.
