Need RAM Advise.
    #3949739 -

This 512mb isnt enough these days, and I am thinking of upgrading. I have an Athlon XP3000 Barton 2.16Ghz, and an Asus a7n8X Deluxe motherboard. I dont know much about ram, and I need suggestions on what i should get, and how i should pair it up in the motherboard. I want to get maximum efficiency.

Specs:

Number of Slots
3

Number of Pins
184-Pin

Maximum Memory Supported
3GB

Memory Supported
unbuffered PC3200/PC2700/PC2100/PC1600 non-ECC DDR RAM

I would like atleast a gig, and people have told me that two(2) 512 sticks would do me much better than 3, because they would be dual channeled. Please share some opinions.

from asus:
The 128-bit TwinBank DDR Memory architecture doubles the DDR 400 (PC3200) bandwidth. System bottlenecks are eliminated with balanced architecture and peak bandwidth up to 6.4GB/s.

so there ya go. get 1gig (512 x 2) of the PC3200..... or, get 2gig (1gig x 2) of PC3200 if you really want no hickups (like if you are a serious gamers or do autoCAD.)

I'm running 2x512 crucial pc3200 on an A7N8X-E Deluxe and never have memory troubles. I would say get anything x2...512 or 1024, and make sure it's a quality brand..

I recommend getting two 512MB sticks of low latency PC3200. It's a little more expensive than the higher latency stuff but it can really help performance, especially on Athlons. Look for CAS 2 5-2-2. Here's what I'm getting for my new system:

Mushkin Hi Perf LII V2 Dual Pack 184-Pin 1GB(512MB x 2) DDR PC-3200 w/ Heatspreader, Model 991357 - Retail
$ 219

Peace,

-Y
