which ram upgrade....
    #17340086 -

So ive decided to splash out on more rams for my computer but I dunno which are better.

ddr, ddr2, ddr3....? Im guessing ddr3 only cus it has a higher number haha

Does it have to match with my motherboard as well?

Help an old computer illiterate man out and I'll shower you with gifts!

it depends on what kind of ram you current computer uses.

whoah whoah whoah... hold on there

The type of ram you can use depends on the type of mother board you have. DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 all have different sized slots and are NOT reverse or forward compatable.

If you have a computer that is brand spanking new, you are running DDR3. If your computer is more than a couple years old, your probably running DDR2.

Ill just assume the latter.

If you are going to shell out some money on computer parts, dont spend much since your computer is probably only compatible with last generation technology. When researching parts, youll see a lot of high sticker prices for DDR2 but its really not worth it. Dont spend more than 30 bucks on whatever you get.

Find out how many DIMM slots your motherboard has, and if you can find out its make and model finding a ram upgrade should be easy.

Just look up your motherboard model # on their website and they'll have a list on their website of compatible RAM, boom, problem solved. Then you just take the model # of supported RAM and buy it.

Yes and ddr2 has more classes then that. You can get ddr2 pc3700 or pc4200 etc. etc. etc.

What make and model/brand is your computer?

My pc is a custom build someone's stuck together, i got it 2nd hand so not sure what components are in there.

I'll get inside the beast later and see what type of ram and the name of the board later.

Cheers for everyones help so far! I already feel more knowledgeable  :themoreyouknow:

Had a mooch inside the pc today and found 4 ram slots with 3 2gb sticks in. There ddr2 and the slots are labelled ddr2(1-4)

The ram says its pc2-6400u so I take it if I by one with this code on it should work?

Would an extra 2gb make much difference to my system or can i mix and match like 3x2gb and 1x4gb or summin..

I don't think 2gb is going to make a substantial difference in your multitasking.

What is it you're looking to get out of your computer performance wise? Faster program loading, better quality video, etc...

You probably wouldn't notice much of a difference until you double your old RAM/get higher clock speed RAM. Did you find out what your maximum supported amount of RAM is?

Re: which ram upgrade.... [Re: chains]

I have a feeling a ram upgrade of a few gigs or even ram of a faster clock rate wont make much of a difference in terms of performance unless you have less than 3 gigs or so. If you have less than 3 gigs, an upgrade will really help magnitudes.

The thing with the DDR generations is that each generation is essentially twice as fast as the one prior (if I recall properly).

If you want to see some awesome performance increases, you would most likely need to build a new computer using current generation components. I dont know what your financial situation is, but if you have some extra cash, you could build an AWESOME new computer for about $500 or so. If you are into modern computer gaming, you might need to extend the budget to $700 or so.

Not cheap stuff, I realize. I just built a new machine myself and it ended up costing me $700-800 for a gaming rig, and I dont regret the high sticker price for a second. I use my computer everyday for so much, it feels so great to have a fast machine which can crank through the work you need to do. All the time saved not waiting for programs to load and such really adds up!

There may also be added health benefits to a fast computer too, considering how stressful a slow computer can be sometimes, hehe.

If you need any help with specifics about your computer, I could help you out more. I know I didnt offer you much specific information which will help you, but I can if you can let me know the specifications of your current computer.

If you have any questions or curiosities about computer components, check out newegg.com to see what is the newest and hottest in computer tech components, and if you want to read reviews and that sort of stuff, check out tomshardware.com . Both are awesome sites (I spent far too much time on both of them learning about computer stuff... lol)

Have a great day!

Are you running Windows?

Unless you are running a 64bit version of Windows, it won't matter how much ram you put in. Your limit is likely 4 gigs.

He has 6 in right now so I'd imagine the person who built the computer for him was sure to put 64 bit windows on.

OP should check and report back.

Actually, there's no reason to assume that. Not everyone knows there are ram limits, while most have heard the "add more ram" calls.

Yup.

And if he's even remotely clever, he'll include the make and model of his motherboard.

3.5 gb limit if I'm not mistaken.

With a PAE-aware version of a 32-bit Windows OS, such as Windows 2003 DataCenter, up to 64GB of physical memory is supported (and addressable) by the 32-bit kernel.

Yes, but most "regular" people don't have a version of Windows that allows for that. Which is why I posted a link that breaks it down for the rest.

Interesting bit of trivia though anyway, I didn't know there were any 32 bit versions of windows like that.

Your computer also has 6 gigs of ram already. Not sure how much more performance you are going to get with more ram on your current rig. Its pretty good given the specs. Maybe 2 more gigs would give you slight improvement but I have no idea. I know 8 gigs is recommended for modern gaming, but your card and CPU is pretty old

Someone correct me if im wrong but a video card update would probably be better

Yer its all probably pretty old, ive owned it second hand for over 18months now. Im sure a new video card prabably would be a better upgrade but for like 4times the cost of a new ram stick...

If money was no option i'd just buy a whole new system but for now i'm keepin this olde hog and gonna try and stretch its life out as much as I can for as little as possible.

Whats the difference in ddr1200, ddr1066 etc?

Speed i believe. But wait for someone who knows what they are talking about to respond. Im not sure what you need and it may depend on whats already in your system
