Asus motherboard RMA situation

Im Just wondering if anyone has any tips on what I should do with this situation.

I was given a P5Q-EM motherboard a little over 2 years ago as a gift by somebody, and just the other day it died (pretty sure the onboard video went on it- it BSOD'd then when doing POST it made 1 long beep followed by 3 short beeps, then wouldn't boot further and wont even POST now). Anyway, the person can't find the invoice for the board and can't even remember where they purchased it (probably NCIX, but she's not 100% sure). But I do have the serial number. The only reason I mention this is because when I first look up the RMA process on Asus' website, they say to contact the reseller - which I can't do without being 100% sure where I bought it. I dug a little further and found a phone number for Asus Canada support.

So I called Asus Canada Motherboard support line last weekend, and they told me they were experiencing extremely high call volume and were backed up over 24 hours for a response time. They asked what I was calling about and I told them I just need to process an RMA, so the guy says he will put me "at the front of the line" :rolleyes: and I should receive a call back shortly (he then took my name and #). That was a week ago, never heard from them at all.

So last night I called again, waited on hold for half an hour before a woman responded. She asked for my case number (which I had gotten when I had filled out a form on their website describing my problem, the site said this would expedite the process when I called in) and she gave me a couple of suggestions to try to fix the problem (like taking out the CMOS battery which I had already done). Of course they didn't work so she said they would email me an RMA number with instructions.

Its now almost 24hrs later and no email... I'm glad I have another computer to use in the meantime, but regardless I really want to get this process started so I can get my HTPC back up and running again. How should I handle this? What would you do? Thanks

No advise, but good luck. RMA's are a PITA.

I'd consider stop wasting time on a mainboard that's over 2yrs old for which you can find a replacement for a couple of bucks on epay, craigslist or whatever online markets for second hand stuff you have out there.

That indeed does sound like a video error. If you insert a video card, does it boot then? (You might not have a PCIe video card lying around; in that case, forget what I said or find a techie friend with lots of hardware lying around in his living room; there's bound to be someone like that in your network).

Other than that, good luck. I'm not sure if Asus is going to be very forthcoming in processing an RMA without the evidence of an actual purchase, but I have no experience with the Canada branch. In general, OEMs tend to be iffy concerning paperwork.

ive been saying it for a while, but asus designs there boards to fail on purpose or do so unknowningly.  Either way, every single asus board ive ever had has died, in the exact same way...fails to post.


My last asus board, will post eventually if i let it sit there for hours with the power button on, but every time it takes longer and longer.

They just have extremly shitty build quality.  My current board is an EVGA, it has the exact opposite problem, its built really well but has extremely shitty bios on it, and to top it off evga knows it and doesn't give a shit, every single board of there's at least within a certain model that ive delt with is so flawed that it should be recalled due to safety reasons....but there not and evga doesn't give a shit, if you RMA a board to them they send you one back with even more problems than the first one you sent them.

Oh and did you know that depending on what ram you use its considered overclocking and that it voids your warrenty how cool is that!  Yet not only is there no mention of this from either the ram or motherboard box/manuals, these are also boards designed exactly to do that...overclock.  These companys are pieces of shit.
