mexicana-a bulk?

2 1/2 months ago I knocked up some brown rice/rice hull jars with Mexicana -a. While most have been going nuts with the formation of sclerotia, I have a few quart jars that don't seem to have formed many stones. I want to try to at least get some fruits from them. I guess I could just cold shock and case......but then I got to wondering how they would fare in a bulk substrate. I was considering using them to spawn some pasteurized horse poo/straw. Any one tried this? I know Stamates reports that Mexicana -a is naturally found in horse pastures, though not occurring on dung. Any ideas?

AFOAF just did a few dozen quart jars of rye, barely, brown rice, oats, and wheat berries. They loved the mixed grains. I was gonna recommend he make a "poopy pie" - basically a pftek with whole grains and manure substitued for 10 -30% of the verm. I can have him do this, but it may take a couple weeks before I can tell you if it even colonizes ok.

Spawning Pateurized straw yields excellent results. Have fun removing the straw that gets fused with sclerotia that form rapidly in the straw casing. Fruits are nice on straw.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm going to try to harvest the sclerotia from this bulk grow. Going mainly for the mushroom fruit-bodies. Eating things growing ON poo is one thing.....but eating things growing IN poo is another. I'll probably bury the whole deal outside when I have finished fruiting and see what it does.

I wonder how Tampanensis would fair on straw EonTan? Or anyone? More concerned with fruits then stones myself...

had good success with the tampanensis, mexicana A, samuiensis, and semperviva on straw. Fruitbodies increased in size from rye grass seed casings, NOT DRASTICALLY, but better. found the overall efficiency of amount of substrate to amount of yield dry fruits decreases with bulk. That is across the board with every species and strain tried. YOu get larger fruits and lots of weight in one casing with bulk, but you used more substrate to get it. JME
know manure works for mexicana, but don't like to waste manure on anything but Copelandias. live in a city where manure is scarce, and buying through the mail is expensive.
Straw produces some wopper sclerotia, but harvesting is next to impossible. find sclerotia production is most efficient in the casing layer of casings over invitro. You get big yield fast, most of the time, and you get fruits, most of the time. Fruits are far superior for BIOASSAY, IMO.
Potency wise. mexicana, samuiensis< tampanensis<copelandia<semperviva.
Spores are difficult with the tampanensis and the semperviva . have gotten one great print in about ten flushes from the two isolates of tampanensis tried. Lots of light prints. got no spores from the semperviva, but just probably picked early. Elektrolurch? got huge fruits of the semperviva on straw(do a search), but they take forever. guess wasn't patient enough.
find agitation of the casing layer(scratching) to be very beneficial for fruit initiation of the samuiensis on rye grass seed or rye grain cased.
did not see any benefit from coffee with mexicana A on Rye grass seed. Haven't tried rye grain. The place I used to get my rye grain stopped carrying it. Apparently I was the only one buying it So I just use rye grass seed and switched to simered WBS with the sunflowers removed for cubies. Have not noticed any drastic reduction in yields that are reported with WBS compared to rye grain.

Interesting info, thanks! I'd like to keep with these, I really enjoyed the trip off these. Got Pan Cyans going right now though and dung for it as well (same situation, had to get it mailed)...can't wait to get some of these things.
