Problem getting ahold of dessicants.

Well... my dehumidifier decided to commit suicide, and I can't seem to find any dessicants. Can I use salt or perlite to try and dehumidify the air in my drying chamber?
EDIT: I have fresh mushrooms right now, so I can't wait to get the dessicants delivered from a website, or else I would do it that way.

go to home depot or some other kind of hardware/home store. stores like lowe's, home depot, and ANY "do it yourself" place that would sell painting supplies (for homes). go to the painting section and look for something called "damp rid". it comes in what looks like a milk carton and comes in a small plastic tub. buy the one that looks like a milk carton and just pour the little beads of desiccant into your drying container, the tub will work too but its made to absorb moisture in the air from inside the tub it comes in, so unless you have a really big drying container dont get that one (unless you have to).
i would put all your fresh mushies down on papertowels/carboard (or ideally a window screen) elevated off the ground a little so its not sitting on the ground. put your mushies on that and put a fan on that will blow across them for about 24 hours or so, THEN put in your drying chamber with desiccant. you'll have better chances of avoiding rotting then.

Cat litter? Why would Cat litter work above Perlite?

first things first buddy, get those mushies on an elevated platform, preferably a screen, in front of a fan ASAP.

Yeah I know, I've got the fanning part down, thanks for the concern tho. I'm concerned about dessicants mostly. I need a sub for one.

well, like i said, go to a home depot or lowe's and look for "damp rid". its desiccant, just with a fancy name to it.
if you cant find it there just look for it at a shop that sells painting supplies (for houses). look in the phone book for "paint" or "painting supplies" for your area and call some places up tomarrow asking if they carry damp rid or some form of desiccant for "taking moisture out of the air of the room you're going to paint in".

why the hell would you want to use desicant? Go to wal mart and get a food dehydrator and they will be ready by breakfast

I've been able to put mine in a paper towel in the fridge, but only if you're in that much of a pinch. other than that, salt is good for absorbing moisture.

yeah, food dehydrators are best, but if you go to buy one just make sure it has an adjustable thermostat on it. you can get a "Nesco American Harvest" at walmart for about 30 bucks or so... if i remember right. it works like a charm too. but if your short of funds a fan and desiccant is the way to go.

even if it doesn't have a thermostat it will be fine. The heat WILL NOT DAMAGE THE PSILOCIN or PSILOCYBIN

i just said that for caution reasons cus some thermostats go up to 165 degrees, and thats definately way too hot for the shrooms to be sittin in for a couple days.

Perlite is the OPPOSITE of a desiccant.
I also can't find dessicants anywhere. Before someone asks, yes I've checked everywhere. Even agricultural supply stores. Some people will not find dessicants in thier area, and there is a reason.
The reason is (probably) that your humidity is very low. You may find this hard to belive but the humidity in my apartment is only about 30%, SOMETIMES LOWER.
Chances are if you live in a northern area, especially Canada, you will not find dessicants and will have to order online.

Get some Epsom Salts. They should probably be near the rubbing alcohol and peroxide in your grocery/wal-mart. Any salt will work actually:) but Epsom has big particles.
